Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What year was Ron Dante born?

Answer: 1945

He was born August 22, 1945 in Staten Island, New York.
2. Ron Dante is his real name.

Answer: False

He was born as Carmine Granito.
3. Dante got his start in 1965 with a group called The Detergents. What song were they responsible for?

Answer: The Leader Of The Laundromat

Dante's group specialized in parody songs and "The Leader Of The Laundromat" was a spoof of The Shagri-La's "Leader Of The Pack" which was a hit at the time. The song actually got to number 19 on the Billboard charts. Dante's group disbanded in 1966.
4. Dante's next group was The Cufflinks. They recorded a song in 1969 which became a Top ten hit. What was it?

Answer: Tracy

Dante recorded under the Cufflinks name in 1969, and "Tracy" peaked at number nine on Billboard's U.S. Top 100. The group consisted of Ron Dante, Ron Dante, and Ron Dante. Through the technology of studio recording, he was able to simulate an entire musical group with the aid of over dubbing and many recording sesions per day using different voices and backgrounds.

A Cufflinks touring group was organized, but Dante was not a part of it.
5. Again in 1969 he had a big success with a cartoon inspired group. They had a number one hit that year. Who were they?

Answer: The Archies

The Archies cartoons were on television, and they formed a fictitious band, with Archie, Reggie, Jughead, Betty and Veronica. The number one hit was of course "Sugar Sugar". This was the only song by a fictional group to ever make it to the top spot on Billboard. Dante did the lead vocals, and he was backed by some well known musicians, among whom were Andy Kim and Jeff Barry, who co-wrote the song.

The Archies had a number of other hits between 1969 and 1972.
6. Sticking with the cartoon inspired group, they had a 1970 hit called "Jingle Jangle". Who was the lead singer on this song?

Answer: Ron Dante

If you ever get a chance to watch the cartoon where the Archies perform this hit, you'll see Betty and Veronica singing this song. In reality there was no female performer. It was Dante, using a falsetto voice. By the way, the song was a number ten hit on the Billboard charts.
7. 1972 saw Dante provide the voices for another short lived cartoon singing group. Who were they?

Answer: The Chan Clan

None of the other cartoons were around then. The Chan Clan lasted for one season and was loosely based on the fictional detective Charlie Chan, made famous in print and the movies in the 1930s and 1940s. The family in the cartoon had ten children, and oldest kids had a musical group called "The Chan Clan". All vocals for the music were provided by Ron Dante.
8. From 1973 through 1981, Dante provided background vocals for one of the world's most popular singer/songwriters. He also was the producer for this person. Who?

Answer: Barry Manilow

Dante produced most of Barry Manilow's material during that time period, and provided background vocals on Manilow's breakthrough record, "Mandy".
9. Ron Dante actually cut an album in 1979 using his real name on the credits. What was the name of the album?

Answer: Dante's Inferno

This was his attempt at a disco album. Nothing doing. He also tried an album in 1981 called "Street Angel", and again with no success. It appears he did his best work anonymously.
10. Dante did have some success in other areas. He was able to produce a play in 1978 that won a Tony Award. What Broadway show was this?

Answer: Ain't Misbehavin'

Dante was part of the production team that brought "Ain't Misbehavin' to Broadway, led by writer Richard Maltby Jr. The show ran for 1604 performances on Broadway, and starred such notables as Irene Cara, Nell Carter, and Debbie Allen.
