Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sir Elton John's tribute to Princess Diana, the double-sided "Candle In The Wind 1997/The Way You Look Tonight" garnered the top spot for the year. The song, however, was originally written for what fallen icon when it first hit the chart?

Answer: Marilyn Monroe

"Candle", originally written for Marilyn Monroe, only hit number six in its original chart run in the US. The remake spent fourteen weeks at the top of the pop chart and 28 weeks in the Top 40. It was his 57th and 58th pop Top 40 hit overall but only his first solo number one since "Island Girl" in 1975.
2. After winning the Best New Artist Grammy in 1996 for "Blue", LeAnn Rimes came back strong with "How Do I Live", the number two song of 1997. What movie's soundtrack featured this song (performed on the soundtrack by a different artist)?

Answer: Con Air

The song almost did the impossible: taking the top spot for the year without ever hitting number one and spending six months on 1996's pop singles chart. By the end of its chart run, Rimes's masterwork spent 61 total weeks on the pop chart, eleven weeks at the top of the Adult Contemporary chart, went Top 10 on the Country Singles chart and spent four weeks at number two on the Pop Singles chart.

Not bad for a girl who was only 14 at the time of the song's release.
3. "I'll Be Missing You" by Puff Daddy and Faith Evans ranked third for the year. Who also performed on this chart-topping hit?

Answer: 112

Although Puff Daddy teamed up with all four choices at some point, 112 was featured on this hit, which was a tribute to Biggie. It spent eleven weeks at number one, 29 weeks in the Top 40 and sampled the Police's smash "Every Breath You Take".
4. In August 1997, "Mo Money, Mo Problems" became The Notorious B.I.G.'s second and final pop number one. What was the man also called Biggie Smallz' real name?

Answer: Christopher Wallace

Brooklyn-born Wallace became bigger after death than in life. Both of his chart-toppers and most of his hits came after his murder on March 9, 1997. His murder has never been officially solved.
5. What female artist sang "You Were Meant For Me", the number five hit of 1997?

Answer: Jewel

Although Jewel Kilcher's first Top Ten hit only climbed to number two (where it spent only two weeks), it stayed in the Top 40 every week during 1997 and 60 weeks in the Top 40 overall. She went on to record several more hits and wrote a book of poetry. Recently, she has switched musical gears and recorded a country album.
6. With the help of Mase, Puff Daddy holds down the number six slot for 1997 with "Can't Nobody Hold Me Down". Which song(s) does it sample?

Answer: both of these songs

The song was Puff Daddy's second Top 40 hit and first chart-topper. It spent six weeks at number one and 26 weeks in the Top 40.
7. Usher burst onto the music scene with "You Make Me Wanna...", the number seven song of 1997. In what city was he born?

Answer: Dallas, Texas

"You Make Me Wanna..." was another song among the year's best that did not go to the top of the charts. But its 41-week Top 40 chart run and seven weeks at number two was enough to slide it into the number seven slot.
8. In 1997, chart newcomers The Spice Girls scored four Top 40 hits. Which one went to number one and placed eighth for the year?

Answer: Wannabe

The correct choice was "Wannabe", which spent four weeks at the top and 22 weeks in the Top 40.
9. The fourth number two song to make the Top Ten of 1997 came courtesy of Orlando, Florida's Backstreet Boys. What did they ask a certain girl to quit playing games with in the number nine song of the year?

Answer: my heart

The song spent 35 weeks on the chart and two weeks in the runner-up position. It also went platinum. Fortunately, no quacking was involved.
10. En Vogue rounds out 1997's Top Ten list with "Don't Let Go". What was the song's one-word subtitle?

Answer: Love

"Don't Let Go (Love)" is the fifth of our top songs that never reached the top spot. In fact, despite having three platinum and four gold singles, six Top Ten Pop hits, and four songs that climbed to the top of the R&B chart, En Vogue never had a pop chart-topper.
