Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This is a definitive last line from a song that truly defines the meaning of epic ballad. What song is it? "Come on, you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine!"

Answer: "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" - Pink Floyd

This song was in part, a tribute to Syd Barret, the founding member of Pink Floyd. He reportedly was hanging around the studios where Pink Floyd was recording, and at first, no one recognized him. The band noticed a heavyweight man with no hair on his head (no eyebrows either!) Roger Waters started crying when he recognized Syd. It was a sad reunion for them, and it was also the last time Nick Mason, Roger Waters, David Gilmour, or Richard Wright saw him again.
2. The last line of a neat song that you probably know, which is missing a word that you need to fill in? It's by the Scorpions. "Here I am. Rock you like a __________. Here I am."

Answer: Hurricane

"Rock You Like a Hurricane" could be described as their signature song. The music video featured the band in a cage with many girls trying to break in. My mother saw them live in 1988 along with Van Halen, Dokken, Kingdom Come and Metallica. The lead singer pointed right at her during this song. (Way to be, mom.)
3. How about this one? The song is called "Carry On": "Lover can you talk to me?" Now....Who's the artist?

Answer: Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young

This song was written by Stephen Stills, and is my favorite song by the supergroup known as Crosby, Stills, and Nash (with the occasional Neil Young joining in!)
4. How about something to "feed your head" as Grace Slick would say...whose last line was this? "Not necessarily stoned, but beautiful..."

Answer: "Are You Experienced?" - The Jimi Hendrix Experience

Grace Slick was a member of the band Jefferson Airplane, a contemporary of Jimi Hendrix. They played at the Monterey Pop Festival and at Woodstock together. Both bands were of the psychedelic nature, reaching new heights with music.
5. I forgot a word in the last line of a true "anger jam". Can you fill it in? The lyrics go: "Neckties, Contracts, ________... Done Dirt Cheap!" Credits to AC/DC for that awesome song.

Answer: High Voltage

Angus Young once said: "Yes, we're still five little people with a noisy attitude."
6. For all the folk-heads out there, which song is this? "Though you're thinkin' that you're leavin' there too soon. You're leavin' there too soon."

Answer: "Sugar Mountain" - Neil Young

That song was a sad one. It was written by the grandfatherly Neil Young when he had been kicked out of his favorite club in Winnipeg. It was his 19th birthday, and he was too old to hang out there anymore. Don't see many of those teen clubs anymore, do you? Well that was 1965!
7. Okay, time for some straight-up rock now: Van Halen. Great song with little publicity. Fill in the lyric. "No way you can stop me now, as fine as you are. I'll ________!"

Answer: wait

This was written by David Lee Roth after seeing a Calvin Klein advertisement on television. The song features many synthesizers, and crashing cymbals.
8. Awesome last line that is missing a word, can you fill it in? "______, you've got me on my knees. ______, I'm begging, darling please. ______, darling won't you ease my worried mind."

Answer: Layla

Eric Clapton wanted to write a song about a girl, so he did. He used a pseudonym for the girl. Eventually the two got married...but George Harrison was left without a wife in the end. Somehow the two actually managed to stay friends...I don't know how or why! "Angie" is by the Rolling Stones, "Lola" is by the Kinks, and "Cecilia" is by Simon and Garfunkel.
9. This British-American band recorded a beautiful song, and here is the last line: "Dreams unwind. Love's a state of mind." But who was the band?

Answer: Fleetwood Mac

The song was "Rhiannon", a ballad written by Stevie Nicks from the album "Rumours". Funny trivia about the band America: They were actually formed in Britain by American kids living on an overseas Air Force base. Ironic, isn't it?
10. This lyric is a bit obscure by a Canadian band this time! What's the song and who made it? "Godspeed Mother Nature, and I'm weepin' for ya."

Answer: "Guns Guns Guns" - The Guess Who

The Guess Who wrote songs that attacked society, but they also became smash hits. In fact, President Richard Nixon had them play at his inauguration, but they conspicuously left "American Woman" out of their setlist. Hmmmm....
11. You'll hate me for this one! The band is The Pretenders. I won't tell you the song. Here it goes: "And muzak filled the air from _______ to Cuyahoga Falls. Way to go, Ohio!" Can you fill in the word?

Answer: Seneca

The Pretenders had a female singer named Chrissie Hynde who wrote this song after she returned to her childhood home in Akron, Ohio. She found that many of the places she had loved weren't there anymore. Muzak is the term for "mood" or "elevator" music.
12. Arena rock for dummies: "Red, White, and Blue- the future is all but past. So lift up your heart, and make a new start, and lead us away from here!" What was that song again?

Answer: "Suite Madame Blue" - Styx

Arena rock is comprised of those bands that everyone has heard of. For the most part, they are faceless bands. If you went to a concert headlining an arena rock band, you would go there to hear hit songs and have a good time. Their songs were mainstream rock, and Styx was the coolest of them all.
13. One for the girls here! Heart's earth-shattering rock song, which is missing a word in the last line: "He thinks it's so cool to be cold. Never realize the way love dies. When you _______ its soul." Fill it in for me?

Answer: crucify

Heart brought girls into the picture of Rock and Heavy Metal. Ann and Nancy Wilson made rock "okay" for girls to get into. And they had a string of hit singles that many people remember. That song was titled "Heartless".
14. Godfathers of Punk? That's their nickname. This is tough, but it might work your brain a little: "Never ever gonna go away again." Which awesome song is this, and who wrote it?

Answer: "I've Been Away" - The Who

This song is by The Who, and it was on their second album, called "A Quick One" (released in the US as "Happy Jack"). This time the record company imposed a requirement that each band member should write at least two songs, to give the album more than just Pete Townshend's personality. However, Roger Daltrey only wrote one.
15. One of the most popular classic rock bands in the world is none other than Led Zeppelin, but which song is this last line from? "Oh baby, baby, don't mean to fumble but it tastes so grand. Tastes so grand, tastes so grand, baby it's alright. Oh baby it's alright, oh it's alright. It's alright..." (Note that all song titles below are by Led Zeppelin.)

Answer: "Candy Store Rock"

I feel that nothing can best sum up Led Zeppelin other than this quote:
"I think they're probably the greatest British live rock band. The one that had a real mystique, a real aura and presence about the band. It wasn't like a band; it was like some kind of moving spiritual roadshow." - Ian Astbury of The Cult
