Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where is the place the singer is planning to go to? "There's a place - - and I'm goin'"

Answer: up ahead

Up Around The Bend' was Creedence Clearwater Revival's twelfth single and it was released in April 1970. Two earlier singles had been double-sided, and this song was part of another double-sided single with 'Run Through The Jungle' on the flip side.

The Californian band had four main members, three of whom who were John Fogerty, Doug Clifford and Stu Cook. These three knew each other in junior high school and had first formed a group together then John's older brother, Tom, who was a solo singer, joined the group.
2. What does the prospective traveller plan to abandon? "Leave the - - behind"

Answer: sinkin' ship

Band member John Fogerty, who was the group's main songwriter as well as their lead singer, composed 'Up Around The Bend' in early 1970. The group recorded the song very soon afterwards before leaving for a European tour in spring 1970.

Creedence Clearwater Revival had first been called The Blue Velvets when it formed in 1959 and three singles had been released under that name, but had not been major successes. After the group had signed for Fantasy Records in 1964 the label's co-owner Max Weiss renamed them twice but they encountered no real success under those names either.
3. Which item does the singer want someone else to bring? "Bring a song and a - for the banjo"

Answer: smile

After its release the two-sided 'Up Around The Bend' and 'Run Through The Jungle' single soon reached position number four on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. However, 'Up Around The Bend' became the more successful song in charts where the songs' positions were recorded separately.

In 1967 their record company, Fantasy Records, had changed ownership and the band had been able to decide on their own new name. They chose Creedence Clearwater Revival in January 1968, and this then remained their name. Later interviews with band members indicated that the first word was an adaptation of an acquaintance's first name while the second word came from a television commercial for beer.
4. Into what do the neon lights change when the city is left behind? "Where the neons turn to -"

Answer: wood

Both 'Up Around The Bend' and its flip-side 'Run Through The Jungle' were later included on the band's July 1970 album, 'Cosmo's Factory'. This album became the band's most successful one and achieved placings in several countries' album charts.

Under their new name Creedence Clearwater Revival the band had first started to obtain a great deal of airplay in the San Francisco and Chicago areas and then other radio stations had started playing their songs as well. In 1968 their first single to reach the US Top 40 had been a cover version of 'Susie Q' and in the same year they had released their first, self-titled album.
5. What sort of day does the traveller want the other person to think about? "Fix your mind on a - day"

Answer: crystal

The song 'Up Around The Bend' became one of Creedence Clearwater Revival's biggest hits as judged by chart placings. It also received a platinum certificate from the Recording Industry Association of America for selling more than a million copies there.

The group had begun touring around the US during 1968 and later gave concerts in other countries too. They appeared in music festivals, such as the Atlanta Pop Festival in July 1969, and had also played eleven songs at the prestigious Woodstock Festival in August 1969, although they chose not to be included in the film of that event.
6. The vocalist will then have time for what? "Always time for a - -"

Answer: good conversation

As well as its success in the USA, 'Up Around The Bend' was a major success in other countries too, for instance rising to number three on the UK Singles Chart. As part of a double-sided single with 'Run Through The Jungle' it reached number one on the Canadian RPM 100 Singles chart.

Over a period of a few years from 1969 onwards Creedence Clearwater Revival issued a number of successful studio albums and singles, many of which were certified gold or platinum. 1969 was an especially productive time for them as they released three albums in that year while two others were issued in 1970 and all five reached the top ten of the US album charts.
7. The singer invites someone else to do what? "- - - to the end of the highway"

Answer: Catch a ride

The single 'Up Around The Bend' was very well received in a number of mainland European countries, reaching number six or higher in several singles charts. For instance, it rose to number two in the Norwegian chart and to number three in the West German one.

Possibly the band's best-known single is the 1969 'Proud Mary' from their album, 'Bayou Country', as this song was not only successful for Creedence Clearwater Revival but has also been covered by a number of other artists. There have apparently been some one hundred other versions with the one by Ike and Tina Turner reaching number four in the US singles chart in 1971.
8. Near which large object does the vocalist want to meet the other person? "And we'll meet by the big - -"

Answer: red tree

The song 'Up Around The Bend' was not only popular in Europe and North America. For example, it rose to number one on the Australian chart as a double-sided disc with 'Run Through The Jungle', to number four in the New Zealand and to number six in the South African charts on its own.

Several of the other singles Creedence Clearwater Revival issued from their successful albums of 1969 and 1970 also did very well in the US and other countries' charts. Among these singles were 'Bad Moon Rising', which was released in April 1969 and reached number one in the UK charts. Both this single and 'Green River', which was issued in August 1969, were included on their album, 'Green River'.
9. What is being invoked in the chorus? "Come on the - -"

Answer: risin' wind

Other artists recorded 'Up Around The Bend' too with Elton John including it on his 'The Legendary Covers Album 1969-1970'. Later the Finnish band Hanoi Rocks issued the song as a single in 1984 and also included it on their 1984 'Two Steps from the Move' album.

Although none of their singles reached the top of the US singles charts, 'Up Around The Bend' was one of five of Creedence Clearwater Revival's songs to reach number two in those charts. The other four were the already-mentioned 'Proud Mary', 'Bad Moon Rising' and 'Green River' and the 1970 'Lookin' Out My Back Door/Long as I Can See the Light' from the 'Cosmo's Factory' album.
10. The chorus states what about up around the bend? "- - up around the bend"

Answer: We're goin'

'Up Around The Bend' has been featured in a number of films, such as 'Remember the Titans' (2000) and 'Red Dawn' (2012). In addition some television programmes, for instance the mini-series 'From The Earth to the Moon' (1998), have also featured the song.

The group began to disband in 1971 when Tom Fogerty left and then disbanded completely in 1972, although all the members continued to make music. Overall, Creedence Clearwater Revival were very successful over their lifespan and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. A compilation album, 'Chronicle The 20 Greatest Hits', was first issued in 1976 and has appeared on the US Billboard 200 album chart for over 500 weeks and received ten platinum certificates.
