Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Not all of David Bowie's albums are considered masterpieces, but every music lover should at least spare a thought every now and again to his so-called 'Berlin' trilogy. What Bowie album is the track "Sound and Vision" on?

Answer: Low

Even though it's often referred to as the 'Berlin' trilogy - "Low" (1977), "'Heroes'" (1977) and "Lodger" (1979) - only "'Heroes'" was completely recorded in the German capital. The three albums were recorded with Brian Eno and possess a cold, almost post-punk sound.

They were influenced by the Krautrock scene of the seventies (Kraftwerk, Neu and Cluster), so that's partly where the 'Berlin' tag comes from.
2. Don't believe old bores who go on about the 'magnificence of the later Pink Floyd live shows', cos they were just a load of laser beams and oompah. Try listening to some of their earlier albums, like for example the one that "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" is on.

Answer: A Saucerful of Secrets

The creation of "A Saucerful of Secrets" (1968) was a difficult one. Founder member Syd Barrett became very difficult to work with, due to his mental instability. In the end he only appeared on three songs: "Remember a Day", "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" and his only composition on the album "Jugband Blues", for which he brought in a Salvation Army band that he spotted out on the streets.

Another song of his that was recorded was "Vegetable Man", but when he was ousted from the band in March '68, the other members thought the lyrical content was too close for comfort to Barrett's state of mind, and decided not to include it on the album. Barrett's old friend David Gilmour was brought in as replacement guitar player and played on the rest of the tracks.
3. Julian Cope has had a lot of success with books like "Head-On" (1994), "Krautrocksampler" (1995), "The Modern Antiquarian" (1998), "Repossessed" (1999), "The Megalithic European" (2004), and "Japrocksampler" (2007). But what do you know about his albums? What album was his hit single "World Shut Your Mouth" on?

Answer: Saint Julian

Even though Cope used the phrase for his solo debut album, "World Shut Your Mouth" (1984), it was only for his third album that he actually came up with a song to go with the title. "World Shut Your Mouth" (1987) is probably his best known single and greatest solo hit. With his earlier band The Teardrop Explodes he scored a couple of hits as well - "Reward" and "Treason", both in 1981 - catapulting the young Cope and his merry band of LSD freaks into magazines like "Smash Hits" and young girls' hearts.
4. Singer Ian McCulloch has often stated that his band is the best band in the world ... ever. And you wouldn't dare to disagree with the man would you? Anyway, what album is their magnificent song "The Cutter" on?

Answer: Porcupine

Echo was the name of the drum machine the band used in their early days. When they took a real drummer on board - Pete de Freitas joined them in late 1979 - the name stuck. De Freitas was killed in a car accident in 1989.
5. It seems R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe finally outed himself, on the eve of the release of their 2008 album "Accelerate". Anyway, not a big surprise to anyone who knows a little bit about him. But do you also know on which R.E.M. album you can find the song "So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry)"?

Answer: Reckoning

When "Reckoning" (1984) was rereleased in 1992, one of the bonus tracks on the cd was a version of the song "Moon River", made popular by the film "Breakfast at Tiffany's".
6. When Led Zeppelin played a one-off reunion show in December 2007 they forgot to play "Communication Breakdown". On which album can you find this particular track?

Answer: Led Zeppelin

"Communication Breakdown" was also the b-side of their debut single "Good Times, Bad Times", which was the opening song at the '07 reunion show.
7. Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell has kind of lost it, hasn't he? What with that awful James Bond song, that cover version of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" and bloody Audioslave. But let's remember him for the good times he gave us, with "Hands All Over" for example. What album was that on?

Answer: Louder than Love

The song "Big Dumb Sex" on this album was supposed to be a parody of stupid sexist metal like Mötley Crüe and their ilk. Guns 'N Roses recorded a cover version of this song, in a medley with T. Rex' "Buick Makane", for their "Spaghetti Incident?" album.
8. Any of you youngsters remember the golden age of hiphop? Throw away your bling and tell me what Public Enemy album the glorious "Bring the Noise" was on?

Answer: It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back

Public Enemy's debut album "Yo! Bum Rush the Show" (1987) had the words "the government's responsible" printed all over it. On their second album the message became "freedom is a road seldom traveled by the multitude".
9. Even though Parliament probably had the catchier tunes, their twin band Funkadelic delivered more grandiose albums. On what masterpiece will you find the track "Super Stupid"?

Answer: Maggot Brain

"Maggot Brain" (1971) is officially one of the greatest, most inspired albums ever released. In Mojo magazine issue 173 Nick Cave put it in his top five of best records ever.
10. Everybody knows about Frank Zappa's moustache. But do you know where you can find the track "I'm the Slime"?

Answer: Over-Nite Sensation

"Over-Nite Sensation" (1973) surprisingly features backing vocals from Tina Turner and the Ikettes.
