Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "You Don't Even Know Me"

Answer: Al Stewart

This song appears on Al's 1972 album "Orange" and it is one of a number of songs that were inspired by his former girlfriend and, in many respects, his muse, Mandi. They had met in 1967 and their relationship was well and truly over by the time Al had gotten around to writing this break-up song. "News From Spain", another track that appears on this album, was also inspired by the dissolution of this relationship.

The album "Orange" proved to be a transitional one for the Scottish folk singer who would enjoy mainstream success in 1976 with his breakout hit "Year of the Cat".
2. "I Don't Even Know Myself"

Answer: The Who

This is a protest song written by Pete Townshend that appears on The Who's stunning 1971 album "Who's Next" and would also be the B-side to their single "Won't Get Fooled Again". Pete was going through a frustrating period dealing with the scribblings of tabloid journalists and commentators providing analysis after analysis in respect to his character, his temperament and his abilities.

In this track Pete throws his hands in the air and exasperates "how can you know me if I don't even know me".
3. "Does Your Mother Know"

Answer: ABBA

You mention ABBA and hit single and you immediately conjure the picture of the band's two female leads - Agnetha and Frida. However, this track, which appears on their 1979 hit album "Voulez-vous", does not see the ladies take the lead microphone, that privilege is extended to Bjorn Ulvaeus. Written by Benny and Bjorn, the song becomes a form of dance/rock hybrid, which would propel it toward substantial sales across Europe.
4. "I Don't Want to Know"

Answer: Fleetwood Mac

The inclusion of this Stevie Nicks song on Fleetwood Mac's monster 1977 album "Rumours" bought forward outrage and tantrums from the song's writer. Nicks had written the song back in 1974. Her intention at that point was to use it as part of another Nicks/Buckingham collaboration.

In addition, the inclusion of this song on "Rumours" forced another of her tracks, "Silver Springs", to be discarded. After a war of words with drummer Mick Fleetwood and under the threat of being expelled from the band, Nicks sang the song. "Silver Springs" would later be used as the B-side to the single "Go Your Own Way".
5. "D'You Know What I Mean"

Answer: Oasis

This song became the first single from Oasis' third studio album "Be Here Now" (1997). As a single it came in with a length of an outrageous seven minutes and twenty one seconds. However, such was the band's standing at the time that no one sought to rein them in and call on them to prune to a more commercial standard.

The band would toy with their image as the "Next Beatles" by incorporating the line "the Fool's on the hill and I feel fine" into the lyric, borrowing the titles of singles from 1967 and 1964 by the Fab Four.
6. "Do You Know What I Mean"

Answer: Lee Michaels

It took Lee Michaels five albums to land the song that would make him a one-hit wonder. A brilliant musician, particularly with the Hammond organ, Michaels, at one time, played with the Californian surf band The Sentinals before scoring a solo signing with A&M Records in 1967. "Do You Know What I Mean" is a "bouncy" break-up song in which Lee tips his joyous hat to his former girlfriend "I just saw her with my best friend, do you know what I mean." The song peaked at number six on Billboard's Hot 100 in 1971 and was that chart's number nineteen song overall at the year's end.
7. "I Need to Know"

Answer: Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers

The Heartbreakers' second album, "You're Gonna Get It" (1978), struggles to live up to the quality of the band's debut self-titled disc. For the most part the songs on this album almost sound like they were the leftovers from the first and there was good reason for them to have been left out.

The exceptions are the two singles that were lifted from the LP, "I Need to Know" and the scathing second single "Listen to Her Heart". Both border on being mini masterpieces and serve as a timely herald of the good things about to rise from this band.
8. "Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know"

Answer: Britney Spears

Britney ranks this number as one of her favourites as she felt that it challenged her vocally and that it would "surprise people in the best way". It would become the fourth single to support her highly anticipated second album "Oops!... I Did It Again" (2000). The track was produced by "Mutt" Lange and extra lyrics were provided for the song by his then wife Shania Twain.
9. "No One Knows"

Answer: Queens of the Stone Age

It took Queens of the Stone Age three albums to rise above the myth of expectation that had been placed on their shoulders by a hungry audience that had been dripping with anticipation. "No One Knows", a moment of brilliant but disturbing pop music for this outfit, is full of killer riffs and its dark moodiness really does set the scene well for "Songs For the Deaf", their 2002 album that contains some extraordinary rock and roll.
10. "One of Us Must Know (Sooner or Later)"

Answer: Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan released his epic double album "Blonde on Blonde" in 1966. Over the years, no, make that decades, critics have tripped over themselves to laud the LP's third track "Visions of Johanna" as one of Dylan's finest. The track that follows, "One of Us Must Know, is no less a classic song but it has somehow gotten lost in the glare of the spotlight that rests on "Visions". "One of Us Must Know" is an aching song of farewell;
"I didn't know that you were saying "goodbye" for good."
and, to a lesser extent, one of apology;
"I didn't mean to make you so sad
You just happened to be there, that's all"

There is pain in every syllable of those lines but, in the end, Dylan merely shrugs, as if to say, "oh well". Almost like "One of Us Must Know" having to follow in the footprints of "Visions of Johanna".
