Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Born on this day in 1791 in South London was a scientific pioneer in the fields of physics (particularly electromagnetism) and chemistry, who invented what is now known as the Bunsen burner. Who is he?

Answer: Michael Faraday

Faraday's achievements in the world of physics include the discovery of electromagnetic induction, diamagnetism and electrolysis.

Despite the fact that it bears his name, Robert Bunsen did not invent the Bunsen burner. The current design was created by Bunsen's assistant, Peter Desaga, which he adapted from Faraday's initial design.
2. More famous for her role on 'Dr Who', which former singer born on this day in 1982 first came to public attention with her Number 1 single 'Because We Want To'?

Answer: Billie Piper

Piper, known then as just 'Billie', was one of the youngest artists to debut at number one in the UK charts when 'Because We Want To' hit the top in July 1998.
3. Also born on this day in 1515 was the fourth wife of Henry VIII of England. Who was she?

Answer: Anne of Cleves

Henry married Anne in January 1540, after choosing her from a series of portraits of eligible young women that had been painted by Hans Holbein the Younger. However, despite taking a shine to her portrait, Henry took a dislike to Anne herself and the marriage was annulled just six months later on the grounds that it had never been consummated.
4. Born on 22nd September 1931 which novelist wrote 'The Life and Loves of a She-Devil'?

Answer: Fay Weldon

The novel was made into a successful BBC drama series starring Julie T Wallace and Patricia Hodge and, in 1989, into the movie 'She-Devil' starring Roseanne Barr and Meryl Streep.
5. Best known for his role in UK sitcom 'Dad's Army', which actor born on 22nd September 1915 also narrated the 'Mr Men' series for the BBC in the 1970s?

Answer: Arthur Lowe

Lowe provided the voices for all the characters in the 1975 'Mr. Men' cartoon series. A later series which included the 'Little Miss' books was narrated by husband and wife team, John Alderton and Pauline Collins.
6. Born on this day in 1971, Chesney Hawkes had a number 1 hit in the UK with 'The One and Only'. His father Len 'Chip' Hawkes also had a number 1 hit with 'Silence Is Golden' as a member of which 60s UK band?

Answer: The Tremeloes

Len Hawkes joined The Tremeloes after the departure of original band members Brian Poole and Alan Howard in 1966. Two years later the band had their second UK number one hit (but their first with Hawkes) with 'Silence is Golden'. The single was also their biggest hit in the US, reaching number eleven.

Chip eventually left The Tremeloes to manage Chesney's career which began as the star of 1991 film 'Buddy's Song' appearing alongside rock legend, Roger Daltrey. 'The One and Only' was Chesney's only UK top twenty hit.
7. Born on this day in 1976, which Brazilian striker was top scorer with 8 goals at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea?

Answer: Ronaldo

Ronaldo's tally of 8 goals was the highest in a single World Cup finals since Gerd Muller scored 10 in Mexico in 1970. Despite his efforts, Ronaldo missed out on the Golden Ball, awarded to the player deemed the most valuable of the tournament, losing to Germany's Oliver Kahn. He did win the award, however, in 1998.
8. Born on this day in 1957 which Australian singer/songwriter was a member of 'The Birthday Party' before forming his band 'The Bad Seeds'?

Answer: Nick Cave

Hutchence was lead singer of the band INXS, Garrett fronted Midnight Oil and Hay was the lead singer of Men At Work.
9. Which actor and director born this day in 1885 in Austria-Hungary was Oscar-nominated for his role as Max von Mayerling in Billy Wilder's 'Sunset Boulevard'?

Answer: Erich von Stroheim

Facts about von Stroheim's life are muddied by the fact that he was a renowned fantasist. What isn't in dispute is his success in Hollywood, where he began work as a consultant on German culture. He soon took on minor acting roles and in 1919 wrote and directed his first feature film, "Blind Husbands".

His role in "Sunset Boulevard", directed by Billy Wilder, was as a former film director who became the butler to Norma Desmond, an actress he had directed in the silent era. The part of Norma was played by Gloria Swanson, an actress Von Stroheim had directed in the silent era.
10. Which singer, dancer and actress born on this day in 1943 as Antonia Christina Basilotta hit the number 1 spot in the US with her hit 'Mickey'?

Answer: Toni Basil
