Fyodor Dostoyevsky was born in Moscow in 1821, son of the hospital physician Mikhail Andreyevich and Marya Fyodorovna.

Fyodor's older brother, Mikhail, was named after his father, Mikhail Andreyevich. Both brothers attended a boarding school in Moscow from 1831 to 1836.

This was a bad period for Dostoyevsky. His first wife, Marya Dmitriyevna died in April and his brother, Mikhail died in July. After his two tragic losses he slipped into depression. He also became addicted to gambling which added to his existing debts. He was financially ruined.

'The Gambler' was published the same year as his very famous 'Crime and Punishment.' Incidentally, in that year there was an attempt on the life of the then Tsar, Alexander II.

January 28th 1881. Dostoyevsky died of a lung haemorrhage related to emphysema and epileptic seizures. He was buried in Alexander Nevsky Monastery where 40,000 people mourned his death.
