Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the full birth name of the 7th Earl of Lucan?

Answer: Richard John Bingham

The aristocrat was born on December 18th 1934 to George Bingham (the 6th Earl of Lucan) and Kaitilin Elizabeth Ann (nee Dawson).
2. What event drove Lord Lucan to lead a life of anonymity, before being presumed deceased in 1992?

Answer: His children's nanny was murdered.

The unfortunate nanny was Sandra Rivett, who was found dead at Bingham's estranged wife's home in November 1974. There are many theories surrounding the story, many of them - such as Patrick Marnham in his "Trail Of Havoc" book - believing that Lucan had hired a hit man to kill his wife, the former Veronica Mary Duncan.

There are also some people who believe Lucan was in fact innocent, including his own three children George, Frances and Camilla - a fact which has seen the offspring estranged from their mother for several years.

This belief is also explored comprehensively in Sally Moore's book "Lucan Not Guilty". Perhaps the most likely explanation is that he killed the nanny because she was in the way of his plans and then intended to move on to his wife, who escaped. Nobody knows for sure.
3. How old was Lord Lucan when he inherited his earldom?

Answer: 29

Bingham inherited his earldom when his father died in January 1964.
4. What was the name of the pub in which the blood soaked Countess of Lucan burst into screaming "Help me, help me, help me! I've just escaped from being murdered!" on 7th November 1974?

Answer: The Plumber's Arms

The Countess had fled from her assailant into the pub on Lower Belgrave Street and was yelling hysterically about how she'd just escaped being murdered. She had left her three children in the her house, but luckily when the police went round to investigate, they were all still safely in their bedrooms, unharmed.

Their nanny had been less fortunate, and the police made the rather grisly discovery of her battered and lifeless body in a sack between the breakfast room and the kitchen.
5. Lord Lucan rang his mother in the evening of the tragedy, to ask her to pick up the children. Is this true or false?

Answer: True

He also rang her at just after midnight to make sure she had collected them as requested.
6. After serving in the Coldstream Guards and working for a Merchant Bank, Bingham quit his job and became a professional gambler. What "gambling nickname" did he use?

Answer: Lucky

Bingham's chosen nickname could not have been less apt. He was hopeless at the gaming tables and became so addicted to the lifestyle that he ran up almighty losses that would nowadays see people counselled.
7. Which murder weapon, synonymous with the game of "Cluedo", was used on the night of the tragedy?

Answer: Lead Piping

A piece of bandaged lead piping was found in an abandoned Ford Corsair in Newhaven (which Lucan was known to have been using) along with bloodstains of both type A (matching Lady Lucan) and type B (matching Sandra Rivett). Whether Bingham was guilty or not, the signs did NOT look good for him, so you can fully understand the reasons for his disappearance.
8. Which of the following statements are true of Lord Lucan?

Answer: All of these are true

Nobody is sure whether his refusal to take out education assurance was due to his determination to have control of his children, as a symbol of one-oneupmanship or just because he simply wanted to use the money to feed his gambling habit.
9. What was the name of the British satirical comedy show which ran from 1984 to 1996 and often featured Lord Lucan appearing in the background as a waiter or a bartender?

Answer: Spitting Image

There have been so many reported sightings of Lord Lucan since the year he went missing that "Spitting Image" recognised how farcical it had become and featured his puppet regularly on the show, performing all manner of menial tasks in various exotic locations. It was a stroke of genius and just added to this brilliant satirical show's widespread appeal.
10. Lord Lucan's son George has been officially known as the 8th Earl of Lucan since 1992, when Bingham was presumed deceased.

Answer: True

Although Richard John Bingham was presumed dead in 1992, no death certificate has ever been issued, so George has never been able to properly inherit his father's earldom. He tried his hardest in 1998, but the lack of this vital document means that while he is PRESUMED to be the 8th Earl of Lucan, this has still not been officially recognised. The High Court ruled that he WAS dead in 1999, but this is not the same as an official death certificate.

On 23 May 2016, he petitioned the House of Lords to have his succession recognised. On 7 June, the House declared that he had established his claims to the titles and he was directed to be entered on the register of hereditary peers maintained in connection with the House of Lords Act 1999 by virtue of his subsidiary title Baron Bingham in the Peerage of the United Kingdom.
