Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first manager of the English national football team.

Answer: Walter Winterbottom

Winterbottom had a mildly successful playing career, turning out for Manchester United between 1936 and 1938, before a back injury, later diagnosed as the spinal disease, ankylosing spondylitis, ended his playing days.
Uniquely, when he became England manager, he had no managerial experience at all, although his record of only 28 losses from 139 games is very impressive for a man learning while "on the job".
2. Scottish leader during the First War of Scottish Independence 1296-1328.

Answer: William Wallace

Wallace won hero status in his homeland with his victory over the English at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in September 1297, where his men joined forces with the army of Andrew Moray.
In a piece of tactical brilliance, Wallace ordered his men to wait until as many men as they could overcome had crossed the small bridge, knowing that only two horsemen could cross side by side, so reinforcements would be unable to advance at speed.
Wallace was finally captured by the English in 1305 and for his high treason and crimes against English civilians, was hanged, drawn and quartered.
3. Welsh inventor, hailed as the founder of modern lawn tennis.

Answer: Walter Wingfield

Although there were several people experimenting with different versions of tennis, it was Wingfield who marketed his game, complete with rubber balls, net, poles, court markers, rackets and an instruction manual. as a "New and Improved Court for Playing the Ancient Game of Tennis".
The Wingfield Restaurant at the All England Club, Wimbledon is named in his honour and a bust of him is displayed at the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum.
In 1997, Wingfield was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
4. President of USA 1913-1921.

Answer: Woodrow Wilson

Wilson became president in 1913, defeating the incumbent, William Howard Taft and former president Theodore Roosevelt.
Among his notable achievements were implementing the Federal Reserve System and introducing a graduated tax system, both innovations being still in use today.
Following the end of WWI, he was a major influence on the formation of the League of Nations, the forerunner to the United Nations.
5. Deputy leader of the Conservative party in UK from 1975-1991.

Answer: William Whitelaw

Whitelaw served as deputy PM under both Margaret Thatcher and her successor John Major, as well as being Leader of the House of Lords, until 1988, when he resigned this position following a stroke.
Willie, as he was affectionately known was first elected as an MP in 1955 in the constituency of Penrith and the Border, in Cumbria and served the people of the area until 1983.
6. Poet that wrote "O Captain! My Captain!" in 1865.

Answer: Walt Whitman

Whitman is often referred to as "the father of free verse" and the movie "Dead Poets Society" (1989), starring Robin Williams, brought his works to a whole new audience, especially the poem, "O Captain! My Captain!", which is found is Whitman's best loved work, "Leaves of Grass" (1855).
Whitman died in 1892, and was held in such high regard that a public viewing of his body attracted over 1,000 mourners in just three hours.
7. Confectionery magnate, founded a company bearing his name in 1891.

Answer: William Wrigley

William Wrigley Jr. started his empire as a scouring soap company, and in order to encourage customers, he gave away baking powder with his product. He soon found that the baking powder was more popular than the soap, and so switched to selling that, giving away chewing gum as an incentive.
Once again, the free gift was more popular than the purchased item, so he changed again, manufacturing and selling chewing gum and an empire was born.
8. Polish-Canadian ice hockey player. Played for Colorado Avalanche from 2006-2010.

Answer: Wojtek Wolski

Wolski was born in Poland and his parents moved to Canada when he was three years old, settling in Toronto, Ontario.
As a child he was a fan of Colorado Avalanche, with Joe Sakic as his favourite player, so one can only imagine his delight when they drafted him in 2006, and he found himself playing alongside Sakic.
Wolski was a part of the Canadian team that took bronze at the 2018 Winter Olympics, where he scored three goals.
9. Author of the poem that starts, "I wandered lonely as a cloud / That floats on high o'er vales and hills".

Answer: William Wordsworth

Considered one of the finest poets of the Romantic movement, Wordsworth left behind an inspiring legacy of work.
His verse about the Lake District, captured much of the natural beauty of the area in poems such as "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud" (1807), "Lines Written a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey" (1798) along with his guidebook, "Guide to the Lakes" (1810).
10. Actor that played Brad Bellick in TV show "Prison Break" (2005-08)

Answer: Wade Williams

Although Williams had roles in movies such as "Erin Brockovich" (2000), "Ali" (2001) and "Collateral" (2004), it was his starring role as prison warder Bellick in "Prison Break" that gave him his breakout part with some wonderful performances.
Although he hasn't found another starring role since "Prison Break", he is now instantly recognisable, and even more so, when cast as a prison warder, as he was in the Batman movie, "The Dark Knight Rises" in 2012.
