Answer: Harriet Quimby

Harriet was born in Michican in 1875. In August 1911 she was the first woman in America to achieve her pilot's license and the second in the world. The first woman in the world was Baroness de la Roche. In 1912 Harriet Quimby became the first woman to fly solo across the English Channel. During an exhibition flight in 1912 she fell from her plane and was killed.
2. Who was the first woman to be head of MI5?

Answer: Stella Rimington

Stella Rimington became the first female Director General of MI5 in 1992. She retired in 1996 and is now Dame Stella Rimington.
3. Which sport did Evonne Goolagong become famous in?

Answer: Tennis

Evonne Goolagong was born in 1951 and became an Australian tennis player. She won 7 grand slam titles in her career. She has since married and is now known as Evonne Goolagong Cawley.

Queen Victoria was born in 1819 and became Queen in 1837. She died at Osborne House, Isle of Wight on 22nd January 1901. She reigned for 64 years, the longest reign in British history.

Answer: 1903

Marie Curie was born in Warsaw in 1867 and died 1934. She became the first woman to win a Nobel Prize. In 1903 she achieved her first Nobel Prize (for physics) jointly with her husband, Pierre, and with Henri Becquerel, who discovered radium. Her second Nobel Prize was in 1911 for Chemistry.
7. Who was known as "Bloody Mary"?

Answer: Queen Mary I of England

Queen Mary I of England earned her name "Bloody Mary" for burning about 350 people for heresy during her reign of five years from 1553-1558.

Emily Bronte was the middle one of the three famous Bronte sisters. They all used 'pen names' of men as did most women writers at the time. Emily was known as Ellis Bell, Anne was known as Acton Bell and Charlotte was known as Currer Bell.
9. What was Elizabeth Garrett Anderson famous for?

Answer: First woman physician in Great Britain

In 1873 the British Medical Association admitted Elizabeth Garrett Anderson where she was the only woman member for 19 years. She entered medical training as a surgical nurse but was not allowed into the operating room, when she became 1st in her exams the other students had her banned from lectures. She was also the first woman in England to be elected Mayor in Aldeburgh in 1908.
10. What was Ruth Handler famous for inventing in 1959?

Answer: Barbie Doll

Ruth Handler was born in 1916 in Colorado and died in 2002. She named the doll after her daughter who was named Barbara (the Ken doll was named after her son).
