Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "And the evening and the morning were the third day." What had God just created?

Answer: The earth and the plants on it

According to the Old Testament, God created the earth and all in it in seven days

"And the earth brought forth grass and herb yielding seed after his kind and the tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed was in itself after his kind. And God saw that it was good.
"And the evening and the morning were the third day" Genesis 1:12-13 KJV
2. In which book of the Old Testament does Eve say "The serpent beguiled me"?

Answer: Genesis

When Adam and Eve were in the Garden of Eden God told them not to eat the fruit of a certain tree. After they had disobeyed Him and eaten the fruit they knew that they were naked and hid from God. God asked them if they had eaten the fruit.
"And the man said 'The woman whom Thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree and I did eat'
"And the Lord God said to the woman 'What is this that thou hast done?' And the woman said 'The serpent beguiled me and I did eat'" Genesis 3:12-13. KJV
As a result of this they were expelled from the Garden and Adam had to farm the land and Eve had to bear children in pain.
3. Who said "Am I my brother's keeper"?

Answer: Cain

Adam and Eve had two sons, Cain and Abel. Cain farmed crops and Abel looked after the flocks. After a dispute over offerings Cain murdered his brother.
"And the Lord said unto Cain 'Where is thy brother'? And he said I know not. Am I my brother's keeper?" Genesis 4:9 KJV
As a result of this Cain was banished and a mark was put upon him so that no-one would kill him.
4. Who says to Naomi "Thy people shall be my people"?

Answer: Ruth

Naomi and her two daughters-in-law were widowed and had decided to return to Naomi's homeland of Moab. Naomi told Ruth and Orpah to return to their people where they would be able to get husbands.
"Ruth said 'Entreat me not to leave thee or to return from following after thee for whither thou goest I will go; and where thou lodgest I will lodge; Thy people shall be my people and thy God my God
"Where thou diest I will die and there will I be buried.."Ruth 1:16-17. KJV
Orpah returned but Ruth went to Moab with her mother-in-law. Eventually Ruth married Boaz, a kinsman of Naomi.
5. 'Better is a dinner of herbs where love is than a stalled ox and hatred therewith' is a well-known quotation from Proverbs. Who is thought to have written some of this book?

Answer: Solomon

Proverbs is a book of sayings intended to make us think about our behaviour. Most of the proverbs are written as couplets with one line contrasting with the next. Although Solomon is believed to have written many of them it is possible that some were proverbs already known.
They offer guidance on how to live.
6. In what Psalm do we find the words "I will lift up mine eyes to the hills"?

Answer: Psalm 121

The Psalms are a collection of poems and hymns, possibly written and collected together by David. They were probably assembled over a number of years and are used by the Jews in worship.
'Psalms' is a Greek word, the Hebrew word is 'Praises'

"I will lift up mine eyes to the hills from whence cometh my help
"My help cometh from the Lord which made heaven and earth" Psalm 121:1-2 KJV
7. Who said "He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire"?

Answer: John the Baptist

"I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance ; but He that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear; He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire." Matthew 3:11

John the Baptist, son of Mary's cousin Elizabeth, went before Jesus to prepare the way for Him by calling people to repent and be baptized. He baptized Jesus.
Eventually he was put in prison and beheaded.
8. In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus said "Blessed are the peacemakers..." Complete this quotation.

Answer: For they shall be called the children of God

In Matthew 5:3-11 Jesus lists eight Beatitudes or Blessings:
"Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven
"Blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted
"Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth
"Blessed are they who do hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled
"Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy
"Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God
"Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God
"Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness sake for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven" Matthew 5 : 3 - 10 KJV
9. "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen". In which New Testament book does this verse occur?

Answer: Hebrews

Faith is almost impossible to define - if you have it you know what it is. In the Bible are many stories of what can be done through faith.
This is the best definition I have ever seen.
10. In the Lord's Prayer, what is the next line after "Lead us not into temptation...?

Answer: But deliver us from evil

In what has become known as the Lord's Prayer Jesus gives us a pattern for prayer.
"After this manner therefore pray ye. Our Father which art in heaven Hallowed be Thy name
"Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
"Give us this day our daily bread
"And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.
"And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom and the Power and the Glory, for ever. Amen" Matthew 6:9-13 KJV

This prayer is recognised by Christians throughout the world.
