Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Scripture, Adam and Eve 'invented' clothes after they ate from the Tree of Knowledge. What did they use as the world's first set of clothing? (Genesis 3: 7)

Answer: Fig leaves.

After eating from the tree of knowledge, the eyes of Adam and Eve were opened and they realized they were naked, so they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves, according to Scripture. Obviously, this is the first incident in which clothing is mentioned in the Bible.
2. "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" is a musical theater show based on an item of clothing Joseph wore in the Old Testament. In the NIV Bible, how is Joseph's 'dreamcoat' described? (Genesis 37: 3)

Answer: Richly ornamental robe.

"Richly ornamental robe" is the correct answer. However, there is no further information in Scripture about the piece of clothing. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice adapted the story from Genesis for the production "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat". According to Wikipedia, the production is one of the most profitable titles in music theatre.
3. Potiphar's wife attempted to seduce Joseph and when she was spurned, she accused him of trying to force himself onto her. Joseph fled after the woman attempted to lure him into bed with her, and he left behind a piece of his clothing. Shortly later, the woman produced Joseph's clothing to Potiphar, citing it as proof Joseph had attempted to make sport of her. According to Genesis 39: 12 in the NIV Bible, what was the item of clothing?

Answer: Cloak

The item Joseph left behind was a cloak. In other words, it was a loose, outer garment similar to a cape. It's interesting to note on two different occasions, clothing indirectly played a role in Joseph getting into trouble. First there was the richly ornamental robe, as mentioned in Question 2. And in this case, there was the cloak, which Potiphar's wife used to convince her husband that Joseph was guilty of attempted rape and should be locked up in prison.
4. In the Old Testament, David sneaked up behind King Saul while he was relieving himself in a cave and proceeded to cut off a corner of his robe.

Answer: True

True. David did indeed sneak up behind Saul while he was relieving himself in a cave, as per 1 Samuel 24:4. In Verse 11, David shows Saul the corner of his robe to prove he could have killed Saul as the king was bound and determined to kill David. The verse states: "See, my father, look at this piece of your robe in my hand! I cut off the corner of your robe but did not kill you. Now understand and recognize that I am not guilty of wrongdoing or rebellion. I have not wronged you, but you are hunting me down to take my life."
5. Complete the two missing words that pertain to clothing, as per Esther 5: 1 in the NIV Bible: "On the third day Esther put on her _______ _______ and stood in the inner court of the palace, in front of the king's hall. The king was sitting on his royal throne in the hall, facing the entrance."

Answer: Royal robes

Royal robes is the correct answer. No details are given, however, about the robes. It's in this chapter that Esther requested the king to invite Haman to a banquet, which ended in Haman being led to a gallows he built that towered 75 feet high. Haman had planned to hang Mordecai, Esther's cousin, on the gallows. What a turn around.
6. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were bound and thrown into a fiery furnace because they would not serve the gods of Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar and bow down to an image of gold he had set up. According to Daniel 3: 21 in the NIV Bible, what were they wearing when they were thrown into the furnace?

Answer: Robes, trousers, turbans and other clothes.

The three were put into a fiery furnace in which the king ordered to be made seven times hotter than usual. Scripture records the men were wearing robes, trousers, turbans and other clothes when they were put into the furnace and they were not harmed -- in fact their clothes apparently were not singed.

This even though Daniel 3: 22 states the furnace was so hot the flames killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego to the inferno. Verse 25 goes on to state the king saw four men walking around in the fire unharmed.

The fourth men, he said, "looks like a son of the gods."
7. According to Matthew 3: 4 in the NIV Bible, John the Baptist ate locusts and wild honey and dressed in an unusual manner. What did he wear?

Answer: Clothes made of camel's hair with a leather belt around his waist.

John the Baptist was definitely different. In addition to eating locusts and wild honey, he wore clothes made of camel's hair with a leather belt around his waist. He baptized scores of people at the Jordan River and told them he was preparing the way for Messiah. And he didn't mince words when addressing the Pharisees and Sadducees, the church leaders of the day.

He called them a "brood of vipers" and warned them of coming condemnation against them.
8. The Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus appears in Luke 16: 19-31. While Lazarus was covered with sores and begging outside the man's gate, how was the rich man dressed?

Answer: Dressed in purple and fine linen.

The rich man is not named, but Jesus said he lived in luxury and dressed in purple and fine linen. Scripture tells of Lazarus and the rich man dying, with Lazarus ending up by the side of Abraham and the rich man in a place of torment. When the rich man requested that Lazarus come and dip the tip of his finger in water and cool his tongue, Abraham told him this was not possible because there was a "great chasm" and no one could cross over it.

Incidentally, purple in Biblical times was associated with kingship and according to information on Wikipedia, considerable work had to go into the process of producing purple cloth. (Please free to try your hand at the quiz I have posted on FunTrivia about the color purple in the Bible.)
9. According to Mark 15: 17 in the NIV Bible, how did the Roman soldiers dress Jesus prior to his crucifixion?

Answer: In a purple robe with a crown of thorns on his head.

As stated in the answer in the previous question, purple was associated with kingship in the Bible. In this case, however, the soldiers were playing a humiliating joke on Jesus as they dressed him in a purple robe after he had been severely tortured. The twisted crown of thorns on his head was seen as the only 'crown' Jesus was worthy of wearing because the soldiers were telling the world he was an impostor and not the king of anything.
10. Revelation 19: 11-16 in the NIV Bible tell of a rider called Faithful and True on a white horse. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. What's the name written on his robe and on his thigh?

Answer: King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

Revelation is definitely not an easy book to understand and I don't profess to be an expert on the situation. So with that disclaimer out of the way, I'll let Scripture do the work for me. Here's how verses 11 to 16 read in the NIV Bible: "I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and makes war.

His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself.

He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. 'He will rule them with an iron scepter.' He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS."
