Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After having a heart-attack, I would most likely be taking this common medication for the rest of my life.

Answer: ASA (Aspirin)

Post MI (myocardial infarction, or heart-attack), the anti-platelet properties of low-dose (81mg) ASA greatly reduce the likelihood of having a second heart attack. For an over-the-counter medication, that's a very important role.
2. After a heart-attack, the new guidelines also suggest that patients be started on HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor therapy. Which of these name brand medications is such a medication?

Answer: rosuvastatin (Crestor)

HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors are also known as "statins". When taken over a long period of time, they will lower LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol), and reduce the likelihood of death from cadriovascular events. Lipidil is from another class of cholesterol reducing medications, the fibrates.
3. If I were suffering from deep vein thrombosis, I would be given a medication that would start working right away, and another that would start to work later as I kept taking it. Which medication would start to work latest?

Answer: warfarin (Coumadin)

Warfarin antagonizes Vitamin K, which prevents certain clotting factors from being made in the liver. It takes a few days to kick in because the active factors in the blood need to be cleared by the body first. All of the others act soon after they are injected, and will act to prevent coagulation while the warfarin pills begin to work.
4. If you are an asthmatic, which class of blood-pressure medications might cause your asthma medication to work less well?

Answer: Beta-blockers

The most common "rescue" drug for asthma attacks is salbutamol (Ventolin), a beta-2 agonist. A beta-blocker is supposed to only inhibit beta-1 receptors, but there is some overlap. Taking the beta-blocker may reduce the effectiveness of salbutamol inhalers.
5. If you are a diabetic patient using insulin, which class of blood-pressure medications should you be cautious about taking?

Answer: Beta-blockers

Beta-blockers again... mean, eh? Hypoglycemia (which can be triggered by using too much insulin) triggers a sympathetic response via the beta receptors, including tremor and dizziness. While using a beta-blocker, this response is masked, putting the patient at great risk of harm. This is more important in Type 1 or insulin-dependent diabetes than Type 2 diabetes.
6. Which of the following medications is a calcium channel blocker?

Answer: all of these

All three of these medications are calcium channel blockers, but they act in different ways. Nifedipine is one of the dihydropyridine chemicals, and have more effects on blood vessels. Diltiazem and verapamil also have that effect, but they are better suited to alter the heart rate in congestive heart failure.
7. Alpha blockers (like terazosin (Hytrin)) are far down the list in terms of lowering blood pressure. What are they also used to treat?

Answer: benign prostatic hyperplasia

Alpha-blockers lower the urethral tone, easing the symptoms of a growing prostate on the urethra. These are usually reserved for patients whose hypertension has not responded to conventional agents like diuretics, beta-blockers, or ACE inhibitors.
8. Which of the following statements about the anti-arrhythmia drug amiodarone is true?

Answer: All of these statements are true

Of the anti-arrhythmic drugs, this one is the most common medication seen in a community setting. However, it is much safer to try to control the rate of the heart beat with drugs than alter the rhythm. If abnormal heart rhythms persist, defibrillation is much more effective than any medication.
9. Rogaine (minoxidil) was originally designed to treat high blood pressure.

Answer: True

Minoxidil is chemically in the same family as hydralazine, an arterial vasodilator. When it was discovered that people who took it grew hair all over their bodies, it was developed and marketed as a topical hair growth medication.
10. The ultimate goal of using any daily cardiovascular medications is to prevent future cardiovascular adverse events.

Answer: True

This is a throw-away question to give you the take-home message. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, and even certain arrhythmias (believe it or not) are not damaging in and of themselves. The medication targets these problems only to reduce the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and embolisms. Thanks for playing!
