Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This franchise was the first in baseball history to win three World Series crowns.

Answer: Philadelphia

The Cubs won two series in 1907 and 1908. The Philadelphia Athletics began the 1910s off strong by winning the World Series in 1910 against the Cubs. Then they repeated the title against the New York Giants in 1911. They pulled off their third crown in 1913 against the Giants again to be the first franchise to win three World Series.

They apparently weren't satisfied as they tried to make it four by making another World Series appearance in 1914 but lost to the Boston Braves.
2. This pitcher threw two no-hitters in the 1910s.

Answer: Dutch Leonard

Hubert Benjamin "Dutch" Leonard was the only arm to throw two no-hitters in the decade. As a Boston Red Sox left-hander he threw his first on August 16, 1913 against the Browns in a 4-0 win. He threw his second on June 3, 1918 with the same score against the Tigers. Dutch retired with a 139-114 after 11 seasons in 1925.
3. Two American League franchises changed their team name in the decade. They were Cleveland and this franchise.

Answer: New York

Cleveland were the Naps until the 1915 season but the New York Highlanders were the first in 1913 when they changed the team name to the Yankees. In 1912 the Highlanders didn't look very good finishing in last place behind the AL pennant-winning Red Sox by 55 games.

After the Highlander name change to Yankees in 1913 the team won only seven more games but they would make a gradual climb in wins. In the 1921 the franchise went to their first World Series against the Giants but lost. The 1922 season would still hold the same final result.

The Yankees turned it totally around and won their first World Series against the same Giants in 1923. The rest is baseball history.
4. The first newly-built AL ballpark in the 1910s was built for this team and played in first in the decade.

Answer: Chicago

Comiskey Park was built and ready to go for the Chicago White Sox in 1910. The White Sox finished in fourth place in 1909 with 78 wins behind the AL leader Detroit Tigers. In 1910 in their new ballpark, the White Sox finished in sixth place while winning 10 games less. In 1917 they would adapt and go all the way to win the World Series against the New York Giants.
5. Two pitchers threw a no-hitter beyond the ninth inning against each other in a game. They were Hippo Vaughn and this pitcher.

Answer: Fred Toney

What a battle on May 2, 1917, that pitted the Cincinnati Reds against the hosting Chicago Cubs. On the mound for the Reds was Toney and Vaughn for the Cubs. Both pitchers took their no-hitters beyond the ninth inning before the Reds scored two in the 10th to win it 2-0. Toney got his no-hitter while Vaughn pitched a two-hitter. The Reds' Larry Kopf and Jim Thorpe had the two singles.
6. This team won the first Federal League pennant in the decade.

Answer: Indianapolis

The Indianapolis Hoosiers won the first season of the new Federal League in 1914 with eight teams in the league. They won it with their 88-65 record 1.5 games ahead of the runner-up Chicago Chi-Feds. The Hoosiers were led by third baseman Bill McKechnie and outfielder Benny Kauff.

In 1915 the franchise moved to become the Newark Pepper and finished in fifth place in the final season of the league. The Chicago Chi-feds who changed their name to Whales in 1915 won the final pennant of the league managed by Hall of Famer Joe Tinker.
7. This pitcher won 20 games in 20 appearances in the 1910s decade.

Answer: Rube Marquard

Marquard was a New York Giant in 1912. After winning 19 consecutive starts, he came in relief of a game that the Giants won in the bottom of the ninth inning against Brooklyn. Rube finished the 1912 season with a 26-11 record but still finished eighth in the MVP voting. He retired in 1925 after 18 seasons, then was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1971 by the Veteran's Committee.
8. He not only led the 1910s in games started, but was runner-up for most games started in a decade during the entire 20th Century.

Answer: Walter Johnson

Nicknamed "The Big Train", Johnson was a Washington Senator throughout his entire 21-season career from 1907-1927. In addition to some of his career records set such as throwing 110 shutouts, he started 361 games in the 1910s, a record not likely to be duplicated with the arrival of relievers, set-ups, and closing pitchers.

It was a tremendous run for Johnson who won 265 of those 361 games started. He also took the Senators to their first World Series appearance and title in 1924 against the New York Giants.

He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in the hall's first round of inductions in 1936. Walter was runner-up for games started in a decade to the great Cy Young. Young started only four more games with 365 from 1900-1909 for the 20th Century record.
9. The NL Boston franchise changed their team name three times in the 1910s. This team changed their team name four times in the decade.

Answer: Brooklyn

In 1910 the Boston fans watched the Boston Doves, then in 1911 the Boston Rustlers, then in 1912 the Boston Braves. The ownership in Brooklyn couldn't make up their minds. In 1910 they were the Brooklyn Superbas, then Dodgers in 1911 and 1912, then back to the Superbas in 1913, then under the helm of Wilbert Robinson in 1914, the team changed their name again to the Robins.

The franchise continued with the Robins name until 1932 when the name "Dodgers" finally stuck for the franchise. They won their first World Series in 1955 against the Yankees.
10. He had the most hits during the entire decade of the 1910s.

Answer: Ty Cobb

It would be safe to assume that a player who led the league in batting average eight times during a decade would also have the most hits. Cobb was a Detroit Tiger in the decade and set many records with his bat, glove, and feet by spiking opposing players. Tris Speaker and Nap Lajoie were both with Cleveland and the only two players to win a batting title in the decade instead of Cobb. Nicknamed the "Georgia Peach", Cobb had 1968 hits in the decade while smacking 4189 over his 24 seasons while retiring in 1928.

He was a Hall of Fame inductee in the first round of presentations in 1936.
