2. Which player finished the tournament as top goal scorer?

Answer: Oldøich Nejedlý

Nejedlý of Czechoslovakia finished the tournament with 5 goals in 4 matches, most notably a hat-trick in their 3-1 semi-final win over Germany. German Edmund Conen bagged 4 goals, including a hat-trick of his own in Germany's First Round win over Belgium by a score of 5-2. Angelo Schiavio from Italy also got 4, also scoring a hat-trick in the First Round, when Italy annihilated USA 7-1. Brazilian Leônidas scored Brazil's only goal in the tournament, as the South Americans crashed out in the First Round, losing 3-1 to Spain.
3. Much like many European teams declined participation in the first World Cup (held in Uruguay in 1930), many South American nations refused to participate in this tournament; hosted in Europe. Which two South American nations DID participate in the tournament?

Answer: Brazil and Argentina

Both teams qualified for the Finals, but both went out in the First Round. Uruguay's refusal to enter meant that this was the only edition of the FIFA World Cup in which the reigning champions did not participate; to defend their title. Unsurprisingly, Suriname and Guyana have never participated in a FIFA World Cup finals tournament.
4. How many matches did Argentina win in order to qualify for the tournament?

Answer: 0

Argentina were drawn into a qualifying group with Chile, but Chile's withdrawal from the World Cup meant Argentina qualified automatically without playing any games. The same occurred for Brazil with Peru's withdrawal.
5. Which player finished as Switzerland's top scorer in the tournament?

Answer: Leopold Kielholz

Kielholz bagged 3 goals in Switzerland's two games in the tournament, scoring two in their 3-2 win over the Netherlands in the First Round, and one in their 3-2 quarter-final loss to Czechoslovakia. Abegglen and Jäggi both scored a goal each for Switzerland; the nation's other two goals in the tournament. Horvath was Austrian, and was their top scorer, with two goals.
6. How many games in the tournament went to extra time?

Answer: 3

Austria v France in the First Round ended 1-1 at 90 minutes, and a thrilling half hour of extra time produced an eventual score of 3-2 for the Austrians. the quarter-final match Italy v Spain ended 1-1 at full-time and after extra time, so the game was replayed, and Italy won that game 1-0.

The Final also went to extra time, after a 1-1 score, and Italy's Angelo Schiavio bagged a 95th minute winner to seal it for the hosts.
7. This World Cup saw the first participation by an African team. Which one?

Answer: Egypt

Egypt qualified out of a group against Palestine, but were knocked out in the First Round 4-2 by Hungary. They would not qualify for another FIFA World Cup Finals until 1990, when the tournament was once again hosted by Italy. Cameroon didn't qualify for a finals tournament until 1982, while Nigeria had to wait until 1994, and Ghana got their first qualification in 2006.
8. How many stadiums were used for this tournament?

Answer: 8

The stadiums were in: Turin, Bologna, Florence, Genoa, Milan, Naples, Rome and Trieste. This was a huge increase from the 1930 tournament, where only 3 stadiums were used, all of them in Uruguay's capital Montevideo.
9. The highest attended game of the tournament was the Final.

Answer: True

Records state that approximately 55,000 people attended the Final in Rome. Next highest was Italy's semi-final against Austria in Milan, which drew approximately 43,000 supporters.
10. Three players who were named in the tournament squads were playing their club football outside the country they were representing. Two of these were the Brazilians Luiz Luz and Patesko. Who was the third?

Answer: Josef Silný

Silný of Czechoslovakia, who only featured in their First Round 2-1 win over Romania was playing for Nîmes Olympique in France at the time. Italy's star striker Schiavio was playing for Bologna in Italy, as he did for his whole 17 year career. Kick Smit of the Netherlands, who scored one of their two goals in their 3-2 loss to Switzerland in the First Round, was playing for Dutch club PSV Eindhoven.

Italy's goalkeeper and captain Giampiero Combi was another one-club man, playing a glittering 13 year career at Italian giants Juventus.
