Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. While the race is mostly about the horses, the spectacle of the Kentucky Derby is part of the fun. Which of the following was NOT true regarding the 2015 Kentucky Derby?

Answer: It was the 300th running of the Kentucky Derby.

The 2015 Kentucky Derby was the 141st running of the race and its total attendance of 170,513 set a record. From 2006 to 2015 the Kentucky Derby was sponsored by Yum! Brands which is the parent company of KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell. "My Old Kentucky Home" was written by Stephen Foster and it became the state song of Kentucky in 1928.
2. Before the 2015 Kentucky Derby several of the horses had to be scratched due to various injuries. Which horse had the most points coming into the race but was a late scratch due to a possible abscess on his left front foot?

Answer: International Star

In addition to International Star, El Kabeir and Stanford were also late scratches. International Star had won the Louisiana Derby and had 20-1 odds on the morning line. International Star was to be ridden by jockey Miguel Mena and he was trained by Michael Maker.
3. Which two horses in the 2015 Kentucky Derby were trained by Bob Baffert and were the odds-on favorites to win the race?

Answer: American Pharoah and Dortmund

American Pharoah had 5-2 odds while Dortmund had 3-1 odds. Before the 2015 Kentucky Derby Bob Baffert had trained Silver Charm, Real Quiet and War Emblem who all won the first two legs of the Triple Crown in prior years.
4. The first quarter mile was run at 23.24 seconds. Which two horses were essentially tied at this point and eventually finished second and third?

Answer: Firing Line and Dortmund

Dortmund had a fantastic start to the race and appeared to be in great position to win but he finished a disappointing third. Firing Line and Dortmund traded first and second position for much of the race until they were passed by the eventual winner on the final stretch.
5. The fourth place finisher in the 2015 Kentucky Derby had a blistering final stretch and nearly came in third despite being several lengths off coming into the home turn. Which horse was this who was ridden by jockey Joel Rosario?

Answer: Frosted

Frosted finished just behind third place finisher Dortmund and about three lengths behind the winner. Frosted had 15-1 odds to win the race, the sixth highest in the field.
6. Which horse, who shares part of its name with the German name of the city of Gdansk, finished fifth place?

Answer: Danzig Moon

Danzig Moon was ridden by jockey Julien Leparoux and trained by Mark E. Casse.
7. Before the race which horse that eventually finished ninth acted as a moving billboard for the Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao boxing match as he was draped with a blanket advertising the fight?

Answer: Itsaknockout

I can't think of a better named horse to promote a boxing match than Itsaknockout. His blanket had the boxers' names, informed the viewing public that the fight could be ordered on Pay Per View, and then had "Itsaknockout" toward the bottom.
8. Which horse, ridden by jockey John Velazquez, did not seize victory but rather finished a disappointing 10th place?

Answer: Carpe Diem

Carpe Diem had a solid start to the race and was actually in the lead grouping of four horses for much of the race. Unfortunately, he fell off the lead pace and dropped all the way to 10th by the race's completion. Before the race Carpe Diem had 8-1 odds, the third highest in the field (aka third favorite).
9. What jockey rode the winning horse in the 2015 Kentucky Derby after previously leading California Chrome to victory in 2014?

Answer: Victor Espinoza

Victor Espinoza's first Kentucky Derby win came in 2002 when he led War Emblem to victory. After the race an excited Espinoza exclaimed "I feel like the luckiest Mexican on Earth".
10. Which horse won the 2015 Kentucky Derby by about one length after an impressive final stretch where he came from behind from an outside position?

Answer: American Pharoah

American Pharoah finished the race in 2:03.02 which was over half a second faster than California Chrome's winning time in 2014 but over three seconds slower than Secretariat's time in 1973. The sire of American Pharoah was Pioneer of the Nile who finished second in the 2009 Kentucky Derby.
