Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following National League hitters had fewer home runs then Albert Pujols during the 2003 season?

Answer: Sammy Sosa

Albert tied for 4th place in the National League with Javy Lopez. They both had 43 home runs. Jim Thome led the league with 47 which tied Alex Rodriquez of the American League. Richie Sexson and Barry Bonds were tied for 2nd in the NL with 45. Sammy Sosa had 40 long balls. A-Rod was the only AL player with more home runs then Pujols.
2. Albert Pujols became the first player in Major League Baseball history to hit .300, hit 30 home runs, score 100 runs and drive in 100 runs in each of his first three seasons.

Answer: True

In his first three seasons, his second season was the worst. He finished lower in batting average, home runs, doubles, triples, hits, and RBI's. He did however have fewer strike outs and finished second in the NL MVP voting to Barry Bonds. In 2003 he did have the fewest RBI's in his career at that point with 124 which was 3 less then the privious year and 6 less then his rookie year.

He also finished second in that season in the NL MVP voting to Barry Bonds.
3. Albert was eligible for salary arbitration before the 2004 season. During the week the arbitration hearing was scheduled, the Cardinals signed Albert to a __ year contract.

Answer: 7

This contract would make Albert a potential Cardinal until 2010 when he would be 31. It was a huge plus for both sides, it gave Albert a steady home for several years and gave the Cards a hot bat at a decent price and they do not have to worry about him becoming a free agent for many years.
4. In which of these years did Pujols not finish in the top five voting for the National League MVP?

Answer: 2000

He was in the minors for 2000. In 2001 he won Rookie of the Year and placed in the top five for MVP. In 2002 and 2003 he was second in votes for MVP to Barry Bonds.
5. In what year was Albert Pujols drafted by the Cardinals?

Answer: 1999

He was drafted in the 13th round. If he continues to improve, he could be known as the biggest steal in the draft since Mike Piazza.
6. How many positions did Albert play in his second season with St. Louis?

Answer: 6

In 2002 he played first base, third base, left field, right field, designated hitter, and shortstop. His normal role was left field that season.
7. In the spring prior to his rookie year, Pujols was slated to start the season playing AAA baseball.

Answer: False

He was slated to start the 2001 season in AA but made a name for himself during spring training. In April 2001, he hit .370 with 8 home runs and 27 RBIs. Quite an impressive debut I might add.
8. In his first three Major League seaons, Albert hit a total of 114 home runs. Albert was the ___ player to have put this record in his resume (most HRs by a player in his first 3 seasons)?

Answer: 2nd

Albert hit 37-34-43 in 2001-02-03. Ralph Kiner of the Pittsburgh Pirates was the first to do this in his first three seasons, 1946-47-48, when he hit 23-51-40.
9. When Albert won the NL batting title in 2003, it was the closest batting race in NL history.

Answer: True

Pujols finished at .3587 while Helton hit .3585 for Colorado, a difference of .0002. Helton was intentionally walked in the final game, if he was not walked and got a base hit he would have edged out Pujols for the NL batting title that year.
10. Which was Pujol's jersey number when he joined the Cardinals?

Answer: 5

15 was Jim Edmonds, 3 was Bo Hart, and 23 was Cal Eldred.
