Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Daniel Cabrera was the starting pitcher for the Orioles that evening. Who started for the Rangers?

Answer: Kason Gabbard

Gabbard ended up pitching 6 innings, giving up an RBI single to Corey Patterson in the 1st inning and back-to-back RBI hits to Miguel Tejada and Nick Markakis in the 3rd.
2. Who drove in the first Ranger run?

Answer: Jarrod Saltalamacchia

Cabrera walked Marlon Byrd, gave up a single to Jason Botts, and a single to David Murphy. Saltalamacchia singled to score in both Byrd and Botts, and himself was scored when the next batter Ramon Vazquez homered to give the Rangers a 5-3 lead.
3. After Rangers started the 6th with another home run, Daniel Cabrera was relieved by a pitcher that only lasted 0.2 innings -- Who was this pitcher?

Answer: Brian Burres

Burres ended up giving 8 hits, 8 runs, a walk, and a wild pitch before Rob Bell subbed in to end the inning after one more run credited to Burres scored on a single. (Burres finished the game with a total 108 ERA).
4. After Rangers started the 6th with another home run, Daniel Cabrera was relieved by a pitcher that only lasted 0.2 innings -- During that reliever's armageddon on the mound, the Rangers hit their first grand slam of the game. Who's bat was it off of?

Answer: Marlon Byrd

Byrd finished the game 2-4, with 4 RBIs, all from the grand slam.
5. The Rangers' highest scoring inning was when they scored 10 in the ___ inning.

Answer: 8th

The Rangers did all their scoring in 4 innings: 5 in the 4th, 9 in the 6th, 10 in the 8th, and 6 in the 9th. 7 of those runs came off of Rob Bell alone.
6. The Rangers hit their first grand slam in the 6th. Their second grand slam was in the 8th. Who hit it, as a pinch hitter for Rangers star Michael Young?

Answer: Travis Metcalf

Young finished the game going 1-4, scoring on the grand slam from Byrd in the 6th. Metcalf replaced Young in the 8th and finished with a grand slam and a walk.
7. The Rangers sent only one reliever to replace their starter in the 7th inning. Since he wound up pitching 3 innings, major league rules state he's credited with the save, regardless of the score. Who was this reliever?

Answer: Wes Littleton

Perhaps the most amusing part of this game, Littleton gave up no runs in 3 innings and was credited the save regardless of having quite a large safety net of a 27 run lead.
8. The Orioles only sent out 4 pitchers to salvage the mess of the game they were having, an average of 7.5 runs given up per pitcher. Why was the Orioles Manager, Dave Trembley, unwilling to use more relievers?

Answer: It was the first game of a doubleheader.

To save for enough pitchers on the next game of the doubleheader and since the Orioles were not a contender, Trembley allowed his pitchers to get shelled in hopes the game will work out on its own. Nowadays, more and more position players are taking the mound in blowouts to save bullpen arms.
9. Two Rangers had 7 RBIs that game -- One was Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Who was the other?

Answer: Ramon Vazquez

Saltalamacchia (5-6) and Vazquez (4-6) each also had two home runs that game, combined accounting for almost half the Rangers offense that game.
10. Two Rangers had 7 RBIs that game -- What was unique of these two hitters?

Answer: They were the 8th and 9th batters in the lineup.

Saltalamacchia and Vazquez were on opposite ends of each of their careers. Saltalamacchia was an unpolished rookie recently traded from the Braves as part of the package that sent Mark Teixeira to the Braves. Vazquez was a long-time utility journeyman entering in his 6th season and 5th major league team. He would retire in 2010.
