Hitzfeld was appointed as manager in July 1998, succeeding Giovanni Trapattoni who had held the position since 1996. Hitzfeld had managed Bayern's arch-rival Borussia Dortmund between 1991 and 1998.

Hitzfeld left Bayern after the 2003-04 season, having won four Bundeliga titles, two DFB-Pokal cups and the Champions League with the Bavarians. He returned in February 2007, leading the club to another Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal victory before leaving the club for good at the end of the 2007-08 season.

Elber scored six times in the 2000-01 Champions League. Only Real Madrid forward Raul scored more, registering seven goals. Elber finished the 2000-01 season with 21 goals in all competitions. Scholl scored five goals in the club's European campaign, with Paulo Sergio scoring on three occasions.

While Jeremies was a crucial part of Bayern's midfield, he scored only once during the campaign.

While Paris Saint-Germain was not the powerhouse that it became in the 2010s, the side still featured some notable players, including Jay-Jay Okocha and Nicolas Anelka. PSG scored ten points in the first group phase, but was eliminated at the second stage.

Bayern lost again in France in the second phase with a 3-0 loss to a Sidney Govou-inspired Lyon. Out of the other ten games, Bayern won seven of them. Hitzfeld's men won both groups they played in.

Valencia had a remarkable record, conceding only six goals in their twelve group fixtures. Manchester United conceded ten goals. While Leeds had conceded 16 goals, they had scored 21 to make up for their defensive frailties.

Bayern won the first leg at Old Trafford by a 1-0 scoreline due to a late Paulo Sergio goal. Elber and Scholl netted in the first half at Bayern's Olympiastadion and despite a Ryan Giggs strike, the Bavarians progressed with a 3-1 aggregate victory.

The semi-finals were eerily similar to the quarter-finals from a Bayern standpoint. Hitzfeld's side won 1-0 at Real's Santiago Bernabeu before winning 2-1 at home in the second leg. Elber scored the only goal at the Bernabeu before he and Jeremies scored the goals in the return fixture. Arsenal faced Valencia in the quarter-finals, going out on away goals. Leeds did make it to the semi-finals, but lost 3-0 on aggregate to Valencia. Barcelona were eliminated in the first group stage and fell into the UEFA Cup, where they eventually made the semi-finals, losing to Liverpool.

Sergio missed the first penalty of the shootout. The Spanish side had the advantage until Zlatko Zahovic missed his spot kick. Scholl was substituted for Sergio in extra time so was not allowed to participate in the shootout. Lizarazu scored his penalty in sudden death to keep the Bavarians in the game. Effenberg scored two penalties that night, converting in the penalty shootout and scoring Bayern's equaliser from the spot earlier on.

Answer: Oliver Kahn

Kahn put in an all-time great performance in the 2001 Champions League final. He made four saves in normal gameplay, only conceding from a Gaizka Mendieta penalty in the third minute. His finest moments came in the penalty shootout. He saved penalties from Zlatko Zahovic, Amedeo Carboni and Mauricio Pellegrino, sealing the club's first European Cup win since 1976. Kahn received huge praise in the media for consoling his counterpart Santiago Canizares as the rest of the squad celebrated.

Elber was largely ineffective in the final and was eventually substituted for Alexander Zickler. Effenberg scored both of his penalties and captained the team to victory. Lizarazu played the whole game and scored his penalty in the shootout.

Happel won the European Cup with two different clubs, winning with Feyenoord in 1970 and Hamburg in 1983.

Since then, Jose Mourinho accomplished the feat with Porto (2004) and Inter Milan (2010), Jupp Heynckes did it with Real Madrid (1998) and Bayern Munich (2013) and Carlo Ancelotti with AC Milan (2003, 2007) and Real Madrid (2014). Herrera did win two European Cups as a manager, but they both came with the same club, Inter Milan in 1964 and 1965. The furthest that Herrera got with another club was with Barcelona, when he took the Catalan club to a semi-final run in 1960.
