Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which hitter came up one home run short of winning a Triple Crown?

Answer: Cy Seymour

The 16-season Seymour was a Cincinnati Red in 1905. He led the league in batting average, RBIs, and fell short in the home run department by hitting eight. Outfielder and teammate Fred Odwell hit nine for the season. Ironically, Odwell would never hit another home run again.
2. In 1919, Babe Ruth shocked the nation by setting an American League record 29 home runs in a season. He was the first AL player to reach the 20-plateau. Whose record did he break?

Answer: Socks Seybold

In 1901, Nap Lajoie set the AL standard by hitting 14 with the Athletics. In 1902, teammate Seybold hit 16, an AL record which would stand for 17 years until the Babe hit his 29. The following season, Ruth doubled his 1919 total by hitting 54, then broke the record again in 1921 with 59.
3. Who was the first player have 100 pinch-hits in their career?

Answer: Red Lucas

A remarkable achievement in itself, but Lucas was a pitcher. He set the record in 1936 as a Pittsburgh Pirate. Most of his pinch-hits came as a Cincinnati Red. Lucas retired with 114 career pinch-hits, a record that stood until 1965. However, his record because he was a pitcher stood throughout the rest of the century.
4. Which of the following set a record for being the youngest player to hit a major league home run?

Answer: Tommy Brown

Brown began his career as a 16-year old high school student with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1944. The following season at the age of 17 years and four months, he hit his shot off Preacher Roe of the Pirates. Tommy retired in 1953 after nine seasons at the age of 25.
5. Which hard luck player set an American League record for appearing in over 3000 consecutive at-bats without ever hitting a home run?

Answer: Eddie Foster

Foster played from 1910-1923 mostly with the Senators, and was a third baseman. In 13 seasons he hit only six home runs. His dry spell lasted from 1916-1923, with his final consecutive empty bag count at 3278.
6. Which of the following hit a home run in their first Major League at-bat, and later became a pro football Hall of Fame inductee?

Answer: Ace Parker

Parker was an All-American tailback at Duke University in 1936, but signed a baseball contract with the Philadelphia Athletics anyway. After two Major League seasons, he pursued his football career. Badgro became the oldest player in 1981 to be inducted into the football hall at age 78.
7. Which 36-year old Chicago Cub outfielder set a record for throwing out three Pittsburgh Pirates at home plate in one game?

Answer: Jack McCarthy

McCarthy and his elderly arm was challenged by the Pittsburgh Pirates in April 1905. Even after this feat, Jack still lost his job to Frank Schulte. McCarthy came to the Cubs in 1903, left in 1905, and missed out on four World Series appearances in five seasons beginning in 1906 for the Cubs.
8. Who was the first black player to hit a home run in his first Major League career at-bat?

Answer: Dan Bankhead

On August 26, 1947, the Brooklyn Dodger pitcher hit his only home run of his career in his first at-bat. It was also his only hit of the season. Detroit Tiger Gates Brown also did the deed in his first at-bat, but later in 1963.
9. Which Negro League team did Leroy 'Satchel' Paige begin his baseball career with?

Answer: Chattanooga Black Lookouts

Paige's career began in 1926 with the Lookouts. From Chattanooga it was on to the Pittsburgh Crawfords, where he made a name for himself with his arm. Satchel played for many Negro League teams before joining the Major League in 1948 with the Cleveland Indians.

He retired in 1953 as a St. Louis Brown, then came back for a one-game encore at age 58 in 1965. He started that 1965 game and went three innings, striking out one, no walks, and allowing only one hit. He was no-decisioned in the game for his Kansas City Athletics.
10. Which diverse player was the first to play college football in a Rose Bowl, then later play in a World Series?

Answer: Jackie Jensen

Jackie was a Cal All-American runningback and played against Northwestern in the 1949 Rose Bowl. Jensen joined the Yankees in 1950, and in his first season tasted the World Series aura. He played in one game in the series and never had a chance to bat. Chuck Essegian was the second player to accomplish this in 1959.
