During the 2003-04 season, Emmanuel Adebayor was part of the Monaco side which reached the final of the Champions League, and he was also given the Togolese Footballer of the Year award. Adebayor was instrumental in helping Togo to the World Cup finals for the first ever time in 2006, scoring 11 goals in qualifying to make him the leading scorer in Africa.
