Gardener, a British athlete, ran a season's best 6.51 to win the title, just ahead of up-and-coming British sprinter, Craig Pickering. Ronald Pognon of France finished 3rd in 6.6 seconds. Andrey Yepishin of Russia was not entered in this championship, although he had won the silver medal at the World Indoor Athletics championships a year before.

The medal winners were, in order from gold to bronze: Juan Carlos Higeuro, Sergio Gallardo and Arturo Casado. No Russian athletes reached the finals. France had two representatives who finished 4th and 6th, and Great Britain had only 1 representative in the final.

Surprisingly, the usually dominate Russian women earned only two titles. Svetlana Feofanova won the pole vault, in the absence of world record holder Yelena Isinbayeva, and Oksana Zbrozhek won the 800m title. However, it was a less than a full-strength Russian team, and they managed plenty of silver and bronze medals.

In terms of gold medals, the Russian women were in fact joint best at these championships, along with Poland, Sweden, and Belgium.

Answer: Great Britain and Belarus

Belarus won the women's relay in a national record of 3:27.83, ahead of Russia and Great Britain. In the men's race, the German team actually crossed the line first, but were disqualified for pushing after and appeal by the Russian team, boosting their medal to a silver and promoting the British team to the gold medal position. Poland won the bronze.

Answer: Lidia Chojecka

The double which Lidia Chojecka won had never been achieved before. Kelly Holmes had won a 800m/1500m double at the Athens Olympics three years before. Marta Dominguez of Spain won the silver medal in the 3000m but did not enter the 1500m. Liliya Shobukhova won a silver medal the World Indoor Championships in 2006 in the 3000m.

He won the medal, ahead of Swede Linus Thornblad by clearing 2.34. The winner of the Shot Put was Mikulas Konopka from Slovakia. Arnoud Okken from the Netherlands won the 800m, and Roman Sebrle from the Czech Republic won the Heptathlon in a seasons best of 6196 points.

Tia Hellebaut had also won the gold medal at the European Outdoor Championships in 2006, beating the strong home favourite, Kasja Bergqvist. The silver medal was awarded to Antonietta de Martino of Italy, and the bronze medal was won by Venelina Veneva of Bulgaria.

The 3000m is the longest event run at an international indoor championships, so a 5000m race was not competed at this event. The slowest time in the finals of the men's 400m was 46.64 seconds, run by Clemens Zeller of Austria. The slowest time in the 1500m finals was 3:47.00, run by James Thie of Great Britain.

Answer: Long Jump

Andrew Howe of Italy won the medal in a new national record of 8.30m, and the gold medal won by Naide Gomes in the women's event was also won in a national Portugese record of 6.89m.

Russia won 4 bronze medals over the championships: Aleksandr Sergeyev in the mens triple jump, Olesya Zykina in the womens 400m, Olesya Chumakova in the womens 1500m and Olga Ryabinkina in the womens shot put. Poland, France, Spain, and also Great Britain won three bronze medals each.
