Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. October 2002, Madagascar (Malagsay): The champions Adama beat Stade Olympique De L`Emyrne by 149-0. What was the story behind this amazing scoreline?

Answer: Stade scored 149 own goals in protest

Apparently, Stade were so angered by a refereeing decision that they repeatedly put the ball into their own net in protest, 149 times.
2. April 1986, London: West Ham United went on the rampage and walloped Newcastle United 8-1. Centre-half Alvin Martin scored a hat-trick which isn't unusual in itself, but what did stand out about his triple?

Answer: They were all scored against different goalkeepers

Martin had already netted past regular keeper Martin Thomas when he injured a shoulder and had to be replaced. Back in the 1980s substitute goalkeepers were unheard of, so outfield players went between the sticks instead; beginning with Chris Hedworth and finishing with Peter Beardsley against whom Martin netted a goal each.
3. February 2003, Sunderland: This was one of the seasons when Sunderland could do little right and were relegated without trace. This was never more evident when they hosted Charlton Athletic and were three goals down inside 32 minutes. What made the scoreline all the more comical?

Answer: All three goals were own goals by Sunderland players

Sunderland were in disarray by this stage of the season and Stephen Wright put through his own net on 24 minutes. Sunderland's Michael Proctor went one better and scored two own goals in a four minute spell. Thankfully for Sunderland, it didn't get any worse and they even managed a second half goal of their own through a Kevin Phillips penalty.
4. March 1995, Manchester: Manchester United were always playing catch up to Blackburn Rovers in the title race. However, their cause was helped when they demolished Ipswich Town 9-0 at Old Trafford. The scoreline was outstanding enough, but what else happened to hit the headlines?

Answer: Andy Cole became the first player to score five goals in a Premiership match

This was a true hammering with United at their irresistable best. They were only three up at half time but let rip in the second half. Besides Cole's five, Roy Keane, Mark Hughes (2) and Paul Ince also got onto the scoresheet.
5. October 1996, Estonia: Why was a World Cup qualifier between Estonia and Scotland was stopped after just three seconds?

Answer: Only one of the two nations turned up

A total farce from the FIFA archives. It all started well before the game when officials ruled that the floodlights at the stadium in Tallinn were not strong enough for a night kick off so they brought forward the kick off time to the afternoon. Estonia were furious (most of their fans were still at work in the afternoon) and refused to turn up at the new kick off time, instead arriving at the original time. By this time, Scotland had turned up for the afternoon start, kicked off against no opponents and, by FIFA rules, should have been awarded the game by a default 3-0 scoreline. FIFA re-arranged the match for February 1997.

It ended 0-0.
6. April 2005, Newcastle: Amazing scenes late on at St. James Park as Aston Villa won 3-0 at Newcastle, but what incident hit the front pages that evening?

Answer: Two Newcastle players were sent off for fighting with each other

Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer were the guilty pair who traded punches whilst the game carried on around them. It was eventually stopped and the pair were sent off. Earlier, another Toon player, Steven Taylor, was also red carded. Villa's goals came from Juan Pablo Angel and two penalties between the red cards from Gareth Barry.
7. August 1993, Ipswich: In the early days of the Premiership, Tottenham Hotspur drew away at Ipswich Town 1-1. However, what first half incident highlighted the game to the headline writers?

Answer: Spurs scored from the half way line

This was Jason Cundy's claim to fame as a tackle to win the ball near the halfway line went sailing goalwards and straight over opposing keeper Craig Forrest's head, and into the net. John Wark later equalised for Ipswich.
8. November 1993, Bologna, Italy: England's final qualifying game for the 1994 World Cup was away at minnows San Marino where they were expected, and needed to win big to stand any hope of reaching the finals. Ultimately they won 7-1, but the game began in extraordinary fashion. What happened?

Answer: San Marino scored inside 9 seconds

Galteiri's incredible goal, latching on to an underhit back pass from Stuart Pearce, was officially timed at 8.3 seconds. England's seven goals in reply came from Paul Ince (2), Ian Wright (4), and Les Ferdinand. However, other results went against England and they failed to reach the 1994 Finals. The game also saw the end of boss Graham Taylor.
9. July 1999, Paraguay: Colombia faced Argentina in a Copa America match that went down in the records book for all the wrong reasons as regards to one player. Why?

Answer: One Argentine player missed three penalties

Martin Palmero was the guilty party as he missed three penalties awarded to his nation as they lost 3-0 to Columbia. Amazingly, there were five penalties awarded in the game as Columbia's Hamilton Ricard also missed one (and the fifth was converted/scored).
10. January 1961, Luton: Denis Law netted six goals for his Manchester City side as they ripped home side Luton Town apart in the FA Cup 4th round. However, despite scoring six times in the game, Law and City failed to reach the next round. Why not?

Answer: The game was abandoned and City lost the replay

Remarkably unlucky quirk of fate for Law as he scored all six goals, as City led Luton 6-2 only for bad weather to end the game 20 minutes early. Under FA rules, the match was replayed from scratch, where City were beaten 3-1 with Law scoring the City goal again.
