Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bernhard Langer is probably the most well-known German golfer. He managed two major victories in his career: which two? (This is for his active career, not the senior tour).

Answer: The Masters, twice

Born in 1957, Bernhard Langer was active on the European tour from 1976 to 2006. His biggest wins were the 1985 and 1993 Masters tournaments, the first coming from a significant second day deficit with two rounds of 68, 4 under par, on an extremely difficult course.
2. Continuing into his Senior PGA career, Langer won the senior versions of two Majors - the US Open and the British Open in one of his first four years of being on the senior tour. What year was this?

Answer: 2010

After a rather disappointing inaugural 2007 season on the senior tour, Langer had 2nd place and a 4th place finish in 2008, but his best senior year so far was 2010 where he won both the US and British Senior Opens. In 2012, he again came close to this level of success, finishing second in both the Tradition and the Senior US Open.
3. From Bernhard Langer, we move on to another German golfer who has led the world rankings: Martin Kaymer. Langer's stint at number 1 came in 1986, but when and for how long did Kaymer lead the list?

Answer: 8 weeks in 2011

Martin Kaymer displaced Lee Westwood from the number 1 position of the rankings on February 27, 2011 with a second place finish at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, but Westwood took back the title eight weeks later, on April 23 of the same year by winning the Indonesian Masters.
4. Even more than for his time at the top of the world leaderboard, Kaymer will certainly be remembered for one single putt, made on September 30, 2012. Which victory did Kaymer seal with this putt?

Answer: Europe's Ryder Cup triumph

Coming into the last day of the 2012 Ryder Cup, the European team was trailing 6-10 and needed to win 8 of the 12 singles matches to defend the cup. Kaymer, who had been playing inconsistently the on Friday and wasn't nominated for Saturday's play at all, was paired against Steve Stricker in the second last matchup of the day and justified his inclusion into the team by brilliantly putting out on the 18th hole, sealing Europe's greatest comeback victory in the history of the Ryder Cup.
5. Playing on the US-based PGA tour instead of the European Tour since 2003, Alexander Cejka is also one of Germany's long-time golf professionals, although not as successful as Langer and Kaymer. He was, however, not born in Germany. What's his nationality of birth?

Answer: Czechoslovakian

Born in 1970 in Czechoslovakia, Cejka emigrated to West Germany at age 9 with his parents. He started playing professional golf in 1989 and played on the European tour from 1992 to 2002, amassing four wins. He changed to the US-based PGA tour in 2003.
6. While only having three professional singles wins to his name as of 2013, another German golfer, born in 1980, made his name as Bernhard Langer's partner in winning the 2006 WGC-World Cup, giving Germany its second and (as of 2013, last so far) victory in that event. Who is this golfer?

Answer: Marcel Siem

Playing on the European tour since 2002, Siem managed to win the 2004 Dunhill Championship, the 2012 Alstom Open de France and the 2013 Trophée Hassan II. However, his biggest victory was the one at the 2006 World Cup, a tournament in which each nation is represented by a single pair of golfers. Langer and Siem won the event on the first playoff hole against Scotland.

The only German win of that event prior to 2006 dates back to 1990.
7. Sven Strüver is another successful German professional golfer with three wins on the European tour. However, he is more well known for a feat he has accomplished while still an amateur - a record that, while equalled once, still stands 24 years later after it was set. What is this record?

Answer: Lowest single-round amateur score at a European Tour event

Born in 1967, Sven Strüver turned professional in 1990 and won three European Tour events in 1996, 1997 and 1998. His most memorable performance, however, dates from the year 1989, where he played a second round of 62 (10 under par) at the German Open. Strüver's best placing on the Order of Merit was 13th, achieved in 1998, not so much based on big victories but on a consistent seasons where he failed to make the cut only twice.
8. This male German golfer, with wins on the European or PGA tour, was born in 1976. He won the 2001 North West of Ireland Open and the 2002 TNT Open. What is his name?

Answer: Tobias Dier

Tobias Dier played on the European tour from 1999 to 2005, winning two tournaments in his time on this circuit. From 2003 onwards, he could not continue this form and, after a few more seasons with moderate results, he dropped back to the second-tier Challenge Tour in 2006. Marcel Kieffer came close to his first European tour win in 2013, losing only on the ninth playoff hole of the Open de Espana, to Raphael Jacquelin.
9. A look at Germany's best golfers wouldn't be complete without mentioning the best of the ladies. One of them has been on the rise since 2010: Sandra Gal. She won her first LPGA tournament in 2011, and finished 3rd in which of the Ladies' Majors in 2012?

Answer: US Women's Open

Born in 1985 and ranked 33rd in the world at the end of 2012, Sandra Gal has been playing on the LPGA tour since 2008. During her first five years on the tour, she has managed nine top 10 finishes and made the cut at over 80 percent in the tournaments she has played in. She has so far also once been selected for the European Solheim Cup team, having been part of the winning 2011 squad.
10. This lady golfer first made an impact on the scene when she became Germany's Lady amateur golfer of the year in 2003. She turned professional in the fall of that year and since then won three LPGA events, including the 2008 Dubai Ladies Masters where she dashed Annika Sörenstam's hopes of achieving a title hattrick. What is her name?

Answer: Anja Monke

Born 1977, Monke was one of the first internationally successful German lady golfers. She represented Germany twice in the now defunct Women's World Cup of Golf, in 2006 (with Miriam Nagl) and 2007 (with Denise Simon).
