Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This quarterback won the Heisman Trophy playing for the Naval Academy in the early 1960s. He discharged his service obligation and went on to be a great player in professional football thereafter. He is also known for being an outstanding person as well as a great player. Who is he?

Answer: Roger Staubach

Staubach's Navy team went all the way to #2 in the nation, an amazing feat with a team of true scholars. They tried bravely in the 1964 Cotton Bowl game against #1 Texas, but the Longhorns had too many guns and Navy lost 28-6. Bellino was an earlier Navy star and Heisman winner. Dawkins won a Heisman for Army, and Plunkett won one for Stanford.
2. Which one of these players was not an all-time great Syracuse running back?

Answer: Ed Marinaro

Marinaro of course, played for Cornell, making a big run at the Heisman Trophy in 1971. He came in 2nd behind Pat Sullivan (Auburn).
3. This defensive lineman won the Outland Trophy in the 1950s. He went on to become a great NFL lineman, and after that was a well noted actor. He played George Zaharias in a dramatic movie role also. Who is he?

Answer: Alex Karras

Karras was an excellent actor. I loved him in Blazing Saddles, Paper Lion and Centennial. Also the role I referred to above had him playing the husband of Babe Didricksen, known as perhaps the greatest female athlete of all-time. The other names are also of great defensive players, but they did not satisfy the question completely.
4. Who was the great Ole Miss quarterback whose sons were also great quarterbacks in their own right?

Answer: Archie Manning

Gibbs and Griffing were other excellent Ole Miss QBs. Tittle played for LSU. Manning's star sons are Peyton and Eli.
5. This center was an All-American at Georgia Tech. He went to the NFL and played with the great Colts team of the 1960s, and also for the Packers under Lombardi. He later became a well noted college coach and then a TV commentator. Who is he?

Answer: Bill Curry

He played for Bobby Dodd at GT and always was a respectable person and a good leader for young men. He took over at Ga. Tech in the 1980s when it was in a mess. He pulled things together in a few years and had some outstanding teams. He foolishly (in my opinion) left to take the Alabama job.

He never should have gone. Morris and Sheilds were also excellent Ga Tech centers who went on to play in the NFL. Morris played on some great Bears teams and was an All-Pro. Shields played for the Chargers. Shaw was another Ga Tech player but was an offensive guard rather than a center.

He went on the play for Buffalo and was considered a great player.
6. This great halfback was well known for his speed and grace, earning the nickname "Bambi". He played at Arkansas, then went on to greatness in the AFL. Who is he?

Answer: Lance Alworth

Alworth went on to greatness with the San Diego Chargers. Surely his talent, speed, hands, etc, made him the equal of anyone ever at the position. Rentzel went to Oklahoma and was also a great player.
7. This man was one of the great linebackers in the history of college football. He went on to be one of the greatest pro players at his position also. He is known as a man of high moral character. He was "small" for his position, but there were very few in his class. Who played at Alabama and went on to be a Dallas Cowboys immortal?

Answer: Lee Roy Jordan

Jordan remains a big man today in Dallas and in Tuscaloosa, as well he should be. He embodied excellence! Nobis was a great for Texas, and Selmon for Oklahoma. Krause was an outstanding Alabama linebacker, but of another era.
8. One of the greatest running backs in the history of college football, this man hailed from San Francisco. He went to USC, where he won the Heisman Trophy and was on a National Championship team. He later went to the NFL where he played primarily for the Buffalo Bills. Everyone knows him. His line was nicknamed, "The Electric Company", because they, "turned on the Juice". After retirement from football, he turned actor, commentator and commercial spokesman. Who was this running back?

Answer: O. J. Simpson

Simpson was truly one of the greatest backs ever to touch a football. After all he accomplished, he is better known for allegedly murdering his wife and another person. He had the world on a string! White, Bell, and Davis are also USC all-time great tail backs.
9. This running back won the Heisman in the 1950s. He was a great all around player who played in the SEC (for a traditional powerhouse). He played pro football with the Oilers and the Raiders. He later became a dentist. Tragically, he was arrested and prosecuted for counterfeiting, and this blot has kept him out of the College Football Hall of Fame. Who is he?

Answer: Billy Cannon

The great LSU player is possibly their greatest player ever. LSU fans are surely the most rabid of any school. Cannon is an icon there even so and will be forever. Stovall was also an LSU great. Steve Canyon is a comic strip character. Cannon Fodder is something else.
10. This Notre Dame player played quarterback. He was an All-American and won a Heisman Trophy in 1947 while playing for Frank Leahy. He came from Western Pennsylvania. Later he played for the Chicago Bears. While at Notre Dame he was part of three National Championship teams. Who is he?

Answer: Johnny Lujack

He took 3 years off to join the Navy, then returned and finished his career. He played at ND in 1943, 1946-47, winning the Heisman in 1947. Bertelli and Lattner were also ND All-Americans and Heisman winners. Gipp, of course, is perhaps Notre Dame's most storied player, having died tragically and giving Rockne the fodder for the famous "win one for The Gipper" speech that will live forever.
