1. What was the trophy originally called?

Answer: Downtown Athletic Club award

In 1936, the trophy was renamed after Athletic Director of the DAC John Heisman, who passed away.
2. In 1936, running back Jay Berwanger won the first Heisman trophy. What college did Berwanger attend?

Answer: Chicago

1st pick of Philadelphia in (1936), traded to Chicago. Berwanger dictated a two year contract to Halas. Halas told him he'd call him back, but he never did. After Berwanger won the award, he didn't have room to keep it, so he asked his Aunt to keep it for him.

She found that she didn't have the room either, however, she did need a doorstop, and for the next 10 years, the Trophy was used as a doorstop. Berwanger was also tackled by a future President of the United States, Gerald Ford.
3. Who was hired to sculpt the Heisman Memorial Trophy?

Answer: Frank Eliscu

The DAC commissioned Frank Eliscu to sculpt the Trophy. Eliscu used Ed Smith from New York University as the model. Smith would not know he was the person on the Trophy for 50 years. Eliscu was born in New York City, July 13,1912. He passed away on June 19, 1996, in Sarasota, Fl, at the age of 83.
4. Of the 8 schools John Heisman coached, he only had a losing record at one. Which school was that?

Answer: Rice

Heisman finished his carrer at Rice, where his record stood at 14-18-3. His career record was 181-67-16.
5. Who was the first black athlete to win the Heisman?

Answer: Ernie Davis

Ernie Davis died 18 months later of Leukemia.

Ron Dayne surpassed Williams record. Dayne played at Wisconsin and was drafted by the New York Giants.

Griffin was coached by the legendary Woody Hayes. The Buckeye played 7 seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, and one year in the infamous USFL before retiring in 1985.

Answer: Notre Dame

Notre Dame produced 7 amongst 4 coaches. Ohio State had 6 among 4 coaches. USC had 4 with 2 coaches. Auburn only had 2, with Bo Jackson and Pat Sullivan.
10. The Heisman Trophy was at one time given to the best player east of the Mississippi River?

Answer: True

Before the trophy became so prestigious, it was only given to the top player on the east coast.
