The Kings were the first of the 6 new teams to choose, and they selected Hall of Fame goaltender Terry Sawchuk.

The "Fabulous" Forum did not open until midway through their first season (in December, 1967), so until that time they played at the Los Angeles Sports Arena and the Long Beach Arena.

Bill Flett already had the nickname "Cowboy" as that was his off-season occupation on his ranch in Alberta. Cooke insisted his announcers only call him "Cowboy" instead of Bill. Eddie Joyal was nicknamed "Jet" because of his speed and fast slap shot. Cooke went a step further with Juha Widing.

He gave him the nickname "Whitey" because of his blonde hair, and changed the pronunciation of his last name (from "Vee-ding" to "Why-ding") so it was closer to rhyming with Whitey.
