Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What year did the Hunter Mariners play their first season?

Answer: 1997

This is an easy one: they came in the split competition year of 1997 (the other new franchise that year was in Adelaide Aces). The Mariners played two trial games in the 1996 pre-season, but the team had to be disbanded following the legal restrictions placed on Super League, which prevented the 1996 rebel competition from commencing.
2. What year did Hunter play their last season?

Answer: 1997

Yes, they lasted one solitary year. There was no room for them in the combined ARL-Super League joint venture, the NRL competition of 1998.
3. What colours were Hunter's uniforms?

Answer: Blue, white and Gold

A bit tricky this one. They had white collars. Wonder what would have happened if they had of played against Parramatta?
4. Who played half-back for the Hunter Mariners in 1997?

Answer: Brett Kimmorley

The solitary international (albeit Super League internationals).
5. Who coached the Mariners in 1997?

Answer: Graham Murray

He went on to coach the Sydney Roosters in 2000-2001.
6. Which premiership record is held by the club (as at end of 2001)?

Answer: losers in 3rd highest scoring match ever

On May 12th, 1997 Canterbury beat Hunter 48-36. This 84 points scored in the match is just behind Saints defeat of Canterbury (91-6) and Easts defeat of Canterbury (87-7), both in 1935.
7. What was the name of Hunter's home ground (it changed half-way through the year, but I will allow either name), _______ Stadium?

Answer: Breakers

The ground was named Breakers Stadium at the start of 1997 but changed to Topper Stadium mid-way through the season when the National Soccer League club, the Breakers, moved to a different stadium. Thanks to glen006 for the info.
8. Finish the stats for season 1997: played 18, won ___ lost ___ drew ___?

Answer: won 7, lost 11, drew 0

They came 6th, not bad for a team in their first year, just missing out on a top 5 spot. Their best performance was a 24-6 win over the eventual title-winners, Brisbane Broncos.
9. What fact links Hunter's first and last Super League games?

Answer: They scored the same number of points in both games

Their first game was a close one against Canterbury, they lost 16-20. Their last competition game for Hunter was a 16-28 loss to Cronulla at Shark Park. The last match they ever played was their 16-36 loss on October 17th, 1997 to Brisbane Broncos in the final of the SL World Club Challenge.
10. The pointscoring record-holder for Hunter is Nick _____ ?

Answer: Zisti

Good player. Hope you enjoyed your walk down Super League memory lane.
