Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This Australian Formula One driver was World Champion 3 times, the last one with his own car. Who was he?

Answer: Jack Brabham

Jack Brabham was World Champion in 1959 and 1960 in a Cooper, before starting his own team in 1962. Results came shortly after, with Dan Gurney giving him his first win as a constructor in 1964. In 1966, Jack Brabham became the first driver-constructor combination to win the Drivers' World Championship.
Bruce McLaren was also a driver-constructor, but was never World Champion as a driver, though his team won several Championships. David Brabham was Jack's son and drove for Brabham in 1990, never managing to score a point.
2. Dan Gurney was an American race winner for Porsche and Brabham. He started his own Formula One team in 1966. It was established in England, so it was called Anglo American Racers. What was the name of the team's car?

Answer: Eagle

Gurney's team raced in Eagle cars (and sometimes in a privateer McLaren). Anglo-American racers were only in F1 for 3 seasons (1966 to 1968), but they managed one race win by Gurney himself in the 1967 Belgian Grand Prix. Gurney's American team (All American Racers) was active in the CART Championship up to 1999.
3. Graham Hill was a Formula One World Champion in 1962 and 1968 and established his own team in 1973. Even though it had potential, the team never had good results. Its best was a 5th place in the 1975 German Grand Prix by a future Australian World Champion. Who was he?

Answer: Alan Jones

Hill's team folded after the 1975 season when Graham and other members of his team (including lead driver Tony Brise) died in a plane crash. Alan Jones would later drive for Surtees, Shadow and Williams, where he won the 1980 World Championship. Jody Scheckter (a South African) was the 1979 Champion, and Nelson Piquet (a Brazilian) won in 1981. None of them ever drove for Hill.
4. McLaren is one of the most successful teams ever in Formula One. Its founder, Bruce McLaren, was also a successful driver while winning a total of 4 races. How many did he win in a McLaren car?

Answer: 1

Bruce McLaren won the Belgian Grand Prix in 1968, driving his own car. It was McLaren's first win as a constructor and his fourth as a driver. His other 3 wins came while driving a Cooper.
5. Alain Prost was the Formula One World Champion in 1985, 1986, 1989, and 1993. In 1997, he bought the Ligier team and turned it into Prost Grand Prix. Prost (the driver) had 51 race wins. How many races were won by Prost the constructor?

Answer: 0

The Prost team was not as successful as its founder. Prost's best results were 2 second places in the 1997 Spanish Grand Prix (by Olivier Panis) and in the 1999 European Grand Prix (by Jarno Trulli). The team folded at the end of the 2001 season.
6. Jackie Stewart was the Formula One World Champion in 1969, 1971, and 1973, always with the Tyrrell team (though in 1969 they used a Matra chassis). In 1997, he established Stewart Grand Prix. Stewart GP had a single race win in the 1999 European Grand Prix. What driver won that GP?

Answer: Johnny Herbert

Johnny Herbert won the 1999 European GP for Stewart in his only season with the team. Rubens Barrichello (1997 to 1999), Jan Magnussen in 1997 and 1998, and Jos Verstappen (1998) were the other Stewart drivers in the team's 3 seasons in F1.
7. John Surtees was the 1964 Formula One World Champion. He started Surtees Racing Organisation in 1970 and closed it down at the end of the 1978 season. The team had no wins but managed a second place in the 1972 Italian Grand Prix by a nine-time motorcycle world champion. Who was that driver?

Answer: Mike Hailwood

Mike Hailwood won 9 motorcycle world championships before moving to Formula One where he never won a race. John Surtees was also a motorcycle racer before entering F1. He was Motorcycle World Champion 7 times before winning his F1 championship. Those titles make him the first man to be World Champion in 2 and 4 wheels. Tim Schenken and Andrea de Adamich were the other Surtees drivers in the 1972 season.
8. Wilson Fittipaldi started his own team in 1975. In 1976, he managed to lure his more talented brother Emerson (World Champion in 1972 and 1974) to the team. Results were still poor and the team folded after the 1982 season. During their spell in Formula One, the Fittipaldi team employed two World Champions. One was Emerson. Who was the other one?

Answer: Keke Rosberg

While Emerson Fittipaldi drove for his brother in the later stages of his career, Keke Rosberg did so before his prime. Rosberg left Fittipaldi after a scoreless 1981 season and moved to Williams, becoming World Champion in his first season with the team. Chico Serra drove for Fittipaldi but was never World Champion, while Nelson Piquet and Alain Prost were World Champions but never drove for Fittipaldi.
9. Ligier cars entered Formula One for the first time in 1976, but the team's founder (Guy Ligier) had entered F1 much earlier while driving privateer Coopers and Brabhams in the 1960s. What was his best result?

Answer: 6th

Guy Ligier was 6th in the 1967 German Grand Prix, scoring his only championship points. His team was much more successful, making it to the top spot of the podium 9 times (6 of them by Jacques Laffite).
10. This Italian drove for Ferrari and Williams among others, but his attempt at starting a team went terribly wrong. His team never managed a top 10 and did not qualify more than half the times it entered a Grand Prix. Who was that driver-constructor?

Answer: Arturo Merzario

Arturo Merzario drove for Ferrari and Williams in seasons where those teams were not at their prime. The best he could do were three 4th places (2 with Ferrari and 1 with Williams). Team Merzario (active from 1977 to 1979) was a disaster with 14th as best result.
Enzo Coloni, Andrea Sassetti, and Guido Forti (none of them drove in F1, by the way) started the similarly unsuccessful teams: Coloni Racing (1987-1991), Andrea Moda Formula (1992), and Forti Corse (1995-1996). None of them ever scored a point.
