Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which season saw the start of the first League Cup competition?

Answer: 1960-61

The first final was played over two legs, at home and away, and this continued to be the format until the 1966-67 season when Wembley became the venue. All league clubs were eligible to enter, but five clubs chose not to -- Arsenal, Sheffield Wednesday, Tottenham Hotspur, West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
2. Which team won the first League Cup?

Answer: Aston Villa

Villa beat Rotherham 3-2 on aggregate, Rotherham winning the first leg at Millmoor 2-0, Villa winning the second leg 3-0 at Villa Park. The final was not played until the start of the next season, in August 1961.
3. Which team has won the League Cup the most times in the 1980s?

Answer: Liverpool

Liverpool won it four times, back-to-back, in the 1980s -- 1981, 1982, 1983 and 1984. Manchester City emulated this feat some 40 years later, when they won four back-to-back finals -- 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021.

Manchester City also won it in 2014 and 2016, to make it six wins in eight seasons.
4. When Manchester United won the League Cup for the first time, in 1992, it was also their first final appearance.

Answer: False

It was their 3rd appearance in the final -- previously Manchester United had lost in 1983 to Liverpool (2-1) and in 1991 to Sheffield Wednesday (1-0).
5. From 1982 to 1986 the League Cup was known as the Milk Cup. In this time there were only three different winner -- Liverpool, Norwich City and which other club?

Answer: Oxford United

Liverpool won in 1982, 1983 and 1984; Norwich City in 1985 and Oxford United in 1986.
6. From 1987 to 1990, the League Cup was known as the Littlewoods Cup. There were three different winners in those four seasons -- Arsenal once, Luton Town once, but which club won it twice?

Answer: Nottingham Forest

Arsenal won it in 1987, Luton Town in 1988 and Nottingham Forest in 1989.
Forest beat Luton Town 3-1 in 1988-89, and then beat Oldham Athletic 1-0 the following season.
7. The League Cup was known as the Rumbelows Cup, for just two seasons from 1991 to 1992. Manchester United played in both finals.

Answer: True

Manchester United lost 1-0 to Sheffield Wednesday in 1991, but then beat Nottingham Forest 1-0 (goal from Brian McClair) in 1992.
8. For six season from 1993 to 1998 the League Cup became the Coca-Cola Cup. During that time, all finals were played between Premiership teams.

Answer: False

All but two finals were played between Premiership sides. The two exceptions were 1995 when Bolton Wanderers (tier 2) lost 2-1 to Liverpool (Premiership), and 1998 when Middlesbrough (tier 2) lost 2-0 to Chelsea (Premiership).
9. The Worthington Cup (or Worthless Cup depending on who you support) began life in 1999 - the League Cup kept that name for five seasons, to 2003. Who scored Leicester City's winner in the 2000 final?

Answer: Matt Elliott

Matt Elliott scored both goals in Leicester's 2-1 win over Tranmere Rovers. All five finals were won by one goal, except for the 2003 final - Liverpool beat Manchester United 2-0.
10. How many League Cup finals went to replays?

Answer: 5

The five are 1977, 1978, 1981, 1984 and 1997. The 1977 Final had to be replayed twice, with Villa finally beating Everton 3-2 after drawing 0-0 and then 1-1. Penalty shoot-outs have decided final from 1998 onwards, if the game ended in a draw aet (after extra time).

The first final to require a penalty shoot-out was in 2001 Liverpool v Birmingham City 1-1 aet (1-1 at full time). Liverpool won 5-4 on penalties.
