There were three cities (Athens in 1896 and 2004, Paris in 1900 and 1924, Los Angeles in 1932 and 1984) that have hosted the modern games twice.

London previously hosted the games in 1908 and 1948. The 1908 games were due to be held in Rome, but the devastation caused by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 1906, meant they were moved at short notice to London.

2. Who won the bidding to become the main tenant of the Olympic stadium once the games were completed?

Answer: West Ham United

West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur both submitted bids to take over use of the stadium in what became a very controversial and bitter battle. West Ham eventually won the bid.

The Metropolitan Police Force will no doubt be used extensively to police the games of West Ham United at the stadium.

LOCOG is a de facto events company reponsible for staging the games.

The five host boroughs were Newham, Hackney, Waltham Forest, Tower Hamlets, and Greenwich and are in East London. These are some of the poorest boroughs in London and it was a strong theme of the games that they should act as a catalyst for significant urban redevelopment for the less well off.

Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea is in West London. It is the wealthiest borough in London and the whole of England.

Answer: Zaha Hadid

Zaha Hadid was born in Iraq and is am internationally acclaimed architect. Her design for the Aquatic Centre was certainly striking. Its curved roof is said to look like a huge stingray.

Michael Hopkins designed the Velodrome (cycling venue), another truly spectacular design.

Richard Rogers and Norman Foster are perhaps Britain's most well known architects of the past 50 years, responsible for numerous iconic structures in London and all around the world. They have not designed major sites for the 2012 Olympics though.

The first Wheelchair and Amputee Games were held at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in 1948 for World War II veterans suffering from spinal cord injuries. This has now developed into the Paralympic Games which welcomes participants with all types of disabilities. London was chosen to host the Olympic and the Paralympic Games.

There was a famous novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (he of Sherlock Holmes fame) called 'The Hound of the Baskervilles'.

There is a very pretty village to the south of Birmingham called Bournville, which has strong historical associations with the Cadbury family and chocolate making.
