Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This pitcher threw three no-hitters in his career, and set a record for throwing 12 one-hitters. Who is this Hall of Fame great?

Answer: Bob Feller

Feller was a career Cleveland Indian from 1936-1956. Bob was a six-time 20-game winner in his career, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1962. The great Cy Young also threw three no-hitters. Koufax of the Dodgers threw a no-no four times. Ryan later tied Feller's record of 12 one-hitters, but threw seven no-hitters of his own.
2. Tim Wakefield of the Boston Red Sox tied a Major League record in 2004. What did Tim accomplish?

Answer: Gave up six home runs in a game

Amazingly enough, Wakefield and the Red Sox still won this 11-9 slugfest against the Tigers. Tim gave up two home runs to Pudge Rodriguez, then one each to Eric Munson, Carlos Pena, Dmitri Young, and Craig Monroe. Tommy Thomas of the St. Louis Browns initially set the modern day record in 1936.

It was later tied by George Caster of the Athletics in 1940, then Tim Wakefield in 2004, and also R.A. Dickey of the Rangers in 2006.
3. Which player in 1992 tied a record for being walked in seven consecutive at-bats?

Answer: Jose Canseco

Canseco was with the Athletics in 1992. On August 4th and 5th against the Rangers, they passed him seven consecutive times. Ironically, three weeks later he was traded to the Rangers. Billy Rogell of the Tigers initially set this record in 1938. It was later tied by Mel Ott of the Giants in 1943, then Eddie Stanky of the Giants in 1950 also.
4. J.R. Richard of the Houston Astros set a modern-day record for throwing six wild pitches in a game in 1979. Which pitcher tied that record less than four months later?

Answer: Phil Niekro

J.R. played in only 10 seasons in the big leagues, but led the league three times in wild pitches. His season high was 20 that he threw in 1975. On August 4, Niekro threw six wild ones in a game against the Astros. Niekro's Braves lost 4-3.
5. Larry Walker of the Colorado Rockies tied a record in April 1998 for doing what?

Answer: Was thrown out twice caught stealing in the same inning

The Rockies blanked the Mets 4-0 in this game on April 30. Walker was caught stealing or was picked-off only four times in the entire season, but twice in this game in the same inning, and 76 times in his career.
6. Which modern-day Major League pitcher set a record for losing 18 consecutive games?

Answer: Roger Craig

Craig was a pitcher for the 1963 dismal New York Mets. On top of losing 18 consecutive games, Roger went only 5-22 in the season. He also went 10-24 in the season prior of 1962.
7. Which player set a record for playing on the same team for 23 seasons?

Answer: Brooks Robinson

Brooks was a fixture at third base for the Orioles from 1955-1977, while wearing the number 5 on his back. He won the 1964 AL MVP. Robinson was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1983. Carl Yastrzemski of the Red Sox also tied this 23-season streak after retiring in 1983.
8. Which player in the 1950s set a record for getting 12 hits in 12 consecutive at-bats?

Answer: Walt Dropo

Dropo was a Boston Red Sox second-string first baseman in 1952, and played with the great Ted Williams. Although he played in only 37 games in the season, he still ran his streak on July 14th and 15th.
9. This pitcher must have had a lot of nervous ticks in the season because he set a Major League record for committing 16 balks. Who was this multiple 20-game winner?

Answer: Dave Stewart

Stewart began his career as a Dodger in 1978, but didn't make a name for himself until he was with the Athletics. In 1988 with Oakland, he went 21-12 although throwing a record 16 balks. He still finished fourth in the Cy Young voting in the season.
10. Who was the first batter in Major League history to strike out 200 times in a season?

Answer: Mark Reynolds

In a race that neither wanted, the Phillies' Ryan Howard and Mark Reynolds of the Diamondbacks see-sawed back and forth for the league lead in 2008. By season's end, Reynolds had 204 strikeouts while Howard had 199. The old season strikeout record was set by Howard in 2007, with his 199 again.
