Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is Man O' War's sire?

Answer: Fair Play

Fair Play was a rival to the great racehorse Colin. Colin won every time they met. But Fair Play was considered to be a very good racehorse.
2. Who is Man O'War's dam?

Answer: Mahubah

Mahubah was known as a very gentle mare. She was bred to Fair Play in an attempt to combat the unruly behavior he passed to his offspring. Man O' War was not the easiest horse to handle, but he was very smart, and much easier to work with than most Fair Play offspring because of Mahubah's gentle influence.
3. Who trained Man O' War?

Answer: Louis Feustel

He also trained Man O' War's father, Fair Play. He was the one who convinced Samuel Riddle to buy Man O' War.
4. Which horse defeated Man O' War?

Answer: Upset

This race was truly unfair. It took place in the days before starting gates were invented. The horses lined up, a flag was dropped, and the horses galloped off as fast as they could. It could take a long time to get everyone facing the right way. Sometimes, not every horse was racing the right way.

In this race, Man O' War was backwards at the start. The other horses got a huge jump on him. Then, Man O' War got blocked by several horses as he fought for racing room. However, he still finished second, and he almost won. Upset never came close to beating Man O' War again.
5. Which Triple Crown winner did Man O' War sire?

Answer: War Admiral

War Admiral was one of the most admired horses of his day. He raced for the same owner as his father. He won the Triple Crown in 1937.
6. Why didn't Man O' War win the Triple Crown in 1920?

Answer: He skipped the Kentucky Derby

Man O'War skipped the Kentucky Derby because his owner thought he was too young to run a mile and a quarter (the distance of the race). However, many people believe he could have easily won the Triple Crown.
7. Who owned Man O' War?

Answer: Samuel Riddle

He also owned War Admiral. At his trainer's recommendation, he bought the horse. He wasn't sure Man O' War would amount to much, but he figured that if Man O' War was a dud at the racetrack, he could always turn the horse into a hunter.
8. How much did Man O' War cost to buy?

Answer: $5,000

Upset was sold at the same auction for almost 3 times as much.
9. Where did Man O' War make his first start?

Man O' War caught a nasty fever at the long gone Havre de Grace. His temperature reached 106 degrees. When he recovered it was said that the fire of Fair Play had burned out the fever.

Answer: Johnny Loftus
