Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these legendary defensive players coined the term "sack"?

Answer: Deacon Jones

From 1961 to 1974, Deacon Jones perfected the art of pass rushing. Using his (now-illegal) head-slap technique, he ravaged quarterbacks throughout the league. Unfortunately, he was not credited with any sacks, because defensive players were not awarded that statistic until 1982.
2. Halfback O.J. Simpson's nickname was appropriately coined:

Answer: The Juice

Orenthal James "O.J." Simpson was the most dominant halfback of the '70s. Commentator Howard Cosell would often say, "The Juice is loose!" during one of his many breakaway runs.
3. "The Galloping Ghost" refers to which Hall of Fame player?

Answer: Red Grange

Harold Edward Grange's performance in college inspired contemporary sportswriter Grantland Rice to write a poem about him. "A streak of fire, a breath of flame - Eluding all who reach and clutch; - A gray ghost thrown into the game - That rival hands may never touch; - A rubber bounding, blasting soul - Whose destination is the goal - Red Grange of Illinois!" He played in the NFL from 1925 to 1934.
4. Which team's 1977 defense was called the "Grits Blitz" defense?

Answer: Atlanta Falcons

Despite the 1985 Chicago Bears' defensive dominance, the 1977 Atlanta Falcons own the record for fewest points allowed in a season since the Super Bowl era began in 1966. They held opponents to 129 points over 14 games, with an average of 9.2 points per game (compared to the Bears' 12.4).
5. What is Bo Jackson's real name?

Answer: Vincent

Vincent Edward "Bo" Jackson played for 4 seasons in the NFL (1987-1990) and 8 seasons in the MLB (1986-1991, 1993 & 1994). His football career ended with a hip injury against the Cincinnati Bengals in the divisional round of 1990 playoffs. He was the first player ever to receive All-Star honors in both sports.
6. Sammy Baugh is considered by some football historians to be the most versatile player in league history. What was his nickname?

Answer: Slinging Sammy

In 1940, Slinging Sammy led the league in passing, punting, and defensive interceptions all in the same season. He led the league in passing yardage 4 times (1937, 1940, 1947, 1948) and in passing touchdowns 2 times (1940 and 1947). Baugh set the record for highest average punting yardage in a single season, with 51.4 yards in 1940.
7. Deacon Jones- What is his real first name?

Answer: David

David "Deacon" Jones was part of the "Fearsome Foursome", an L.A. Rams defensive line that dominated the opposition during the 1960's.
8. Which of these players was called "The Minister of Defense"?

Answer: Reggie White

Reggie White (1985-2000) was an ordained Evangelical minister and a Hall of Fame defensive lineman at the same time. In 121 games with the Philadelphia Eagles, Reggie White got to the quarterback 124 times. 95 games with the Green Bay Packers yielded 68.5 more sacks, and one last year with the Carolina Panthers produced another 5.5.

He ended his career with 198 overall (second only to Bruce Smith's 200).
9. What team was nicknamed "The Greatest Show on Turf" from 1999-2001?

Answer: St. Louis Rams

Behind quarterback Kurt Warner, the St. Louis Rams were the first team ever to score 500 points in 3 consecutive seasons (1999-2000-2001). They won the Super Bowl in 1999, 23-16 vs. Tennessee Titans, but lost it in 2001 to the New England Patriots, 20-17.
10. What was Walter Payton's nickname?

Answer: sweetness

Walter Payton played with the Chicago Bears from 1975-1987. Although he produced 16,726 yards and 110 touchdowns, he was unable to reach paydirt during his only Super Bowl appearance in 1985.
