Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Byron Dafoe was born on February 25, 1971, in which of the following British countries?

Answer: England

Byron Dafoe originated from Sussex, England. He left Britain to play hockey in the WHL, before his eventual draft. In December of 2003, Byron Dafoe broke his final ties to England by applying for and receiving American citizenship.
2. Byron was drafted in the second round, 35th overall in the 1989 NHL entry draft by which team?

Answer: Washington Capitals

After his draft in 1989, Dafoe saw zero action until the 1992-93 season when he was an emergency call-up. He played one minute in a game, before being sent back to the minors. He played nine games with the Capitals over the next two seasons before being traded to the Los Angeles Kings, in exchange for Alexander Volchkov and Justin Davis.

He played 87 games for the Kings from the 1995-96 to the 1996-97 season, before being traded to the Boston Bruins for Jozef Stumpel and Sandy Moger. He played 283 games with the Bruins from the 1997-98 season until the 2001-02 season.

After the 2001-02 season, Dafoe was picked up by the Atlanta Thrashers as an unrestricted free agent. He left the NHL during the 2004-05 lockout and expressed no interest in returning.
3. In his career, Byron Dafoe faced a total of three penalty shots. Three different players took shots on Dafoe, but only one ever managed to score. Who was it that scored?

Answer: Steve Chiasson

The first penalty shot against Dafoe, occurred on December 11, 1995. Steve Chiasson of the Calgary Flames was given the shot after being hauled down on a breakaway. He made no mistake and banked the shot in for the goal. The second penalty shot that Dafoe faced was on January 9, 2001 against Martin Straka of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Dafoe stopped that attempt.

The final penalty shot against Dafoe occurred on February 9, 2002. Pavel Bure of the Florida Panthers took the shot but to no avail, as Byron Dafoe stopped it with ease.
4. On January 2, 2002, Byron Dafoe allowed which player's 500th career goal?

Answer: Ron Francis

Ron Francis was the picked fourth overall by the Hartford Whalers in the 1981 NHL entry draft. He played 23 seasons in the NHL amassing an amazing total of 549 goals and 1249 assists, combining for a grand total of 1798 points. He also won the Stanley Cup twice with the Pittsburgh Penguins, and almost won a third with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2001-02.
5. Has Byron Dafoe ever been fortunate enough to record two or more consecutive shutouts?

Answer: Yes

Byron Dafoe not only accomplished the amazing feat, he accomplished it a total of three times. The first time he did it was January 1st and January 3rd of 1998. The first was a 0-0 tie against the Ottawa Senators, and the second game was a 3-0 victory against San Jose.

The second time Dafoe accomplished the two consecutive shutouts was on October 12th and October 14th of 1998. He recorded two 3-0 victories over the New York Islanders and the Colorado Avalanche respectively. The last time he accomplished the feat was on April 3rd and April 5th of 1999.

He recorded two consecutive 3-0 victories, this time against Philadelphia and Montreal.
6. Which of the following trophy's did Byron Dafoe win, during his career best 1998-99 season?

Answer: None. He did not win a trophy despite posting career best numbers.

He came close to winning the Vezina Trophy in the 1998-99 season when he recorded an amazing 32-23-11 record with a 1.99 goals against average, a 0.926% save average and ten shutouts. Even with those numbers, they were not enough to beat Ed Belfour, Roman Turek and Dominik Hasek as the year's best goaltenders.

He was never made eligible for any trophy again, due to the fact that he only had full-time starting duties for three of his twelve NHL seasons.
7. Byron Dafoe was a goaltender who adapted a common style to his goal-tending advantage. Which of the following styles did he use?

Answer: Butterfly

Due to his butterfly style, Byron Dafoe had quick reflexes and a lightning quick glove hand. He had a slow start in the NHL, apparently needing time to get his style and his mind perfected. Like most goaltenders, once he started to approach the 35 year old mark, his abilities were greatly reduced.

His speed and glove hand were completely diminished by 2003-04, leading to an underwhelming 4-11-1 record with a 3.14 goals against average. After that year, he never returned to the NHL.
8. Byron Dafoe was a goaltender often competent in the regular season but inept in the post-season. He did however, lead his team to the semi-finals of the playoffs, in the 1998-99 season. Who did Dafoe's Boston Bruins defeat in the first round that year?

Answer: Carolina Hurricanes

1998-99 spelled the lone season that Byron Dafoe ever made it past the first round of the post-season. The Carolina Hurricanes were the team that Byron Dafoe defeated. The Hurricanes, under goaltender Arturs Irbe, lasted six games before being eliminated. Game one resulted in a 2-0 Boston victory, game two resulted in a 3-2 OT defeat, game three ended in a 3-2 defeat, game four was a 4-1 victory, game five was a 4-3 2OT victory, and game six was a 2-0 series clinching victory.

The second round was played against the Buffalo Sabres.

The Bruins won game one, before being subsequently defeated in six games.
9. Which of the following was one of Byron Dafoe's goaltending nicknames?

Answer: Lord Dafoe

Byron Dafoe's goal-tending nicknames are actually quite sensible and don't have any secrets as to their origins. His nicknames are "Lord Dafoe", "Lord Byron", and "Bysie". All of the nicknames take his regular name and adapt them into something more catchy.
10. What was the name of the charitable organization that Byron Dafoe founded, alongside Scott Mellanby and fellow goaltender Olaf Kolzig?

Answer: Athletes Against Autism

Athletes Against Autism was formed by the three NHL players Byron Dafoe, Olaf Kolzig and Scott Mellanby. The purpose of the organization is to raise awareness of Autism among athletes and raise funds to find a treatment or even a cure. One notable NHL player with autism is Stu Barnes of the Winnipeg Jets, Florida Panthers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Buffalo Sabres, and Dallas Stars.
