Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The great Yankee Mickey Mantle played for 18 seasons in the pinstripes. He set a record by hitting 18 World Series home runs. He had the nickname of "Commerce Comet" and which other nickname?

Answer: Muscles

Mantle played from 1951-1968. He won three American League MVP awards and batted for the Triple Crown in 1956. That season made him the first switch-hitter in history to bat for the Triple Crown. Another three times in his great career, he was the runner-up for the MVP Award. Mickey went to 12 World Series and hit three home runs in three different series.

He retired with 536 home runs and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1974.
2. Outfielder Joe Medwick played 11 of his 17 seasons with the Cardinals. He batted for the Triple Crown in 1937, and won the MVP Award for his efforts. Joe was more famous for being ejected from game seven in the 1934 World Series, and ejected for his own protection. What was his nickname?

Answer: Ducky

Medwick and his Cardinals played the Detroit Tigers in the 1934 World Series. In game seven, Joe slid hard into third base which started a fight with Tiger Marv Owen. When the Cardinals took the field after the inning, Tiger fans threw everything except the kitchen sink at Medwick in left field. Home plate umpire Harry Geisel ejected Joe for his own protection, and he was escorted off the field by security.
3. Ralph Branca was a pretty good pitcher, but became famous for giving up the 'shot heard round the world' to Bobby Thomson of the Giants in 1951. He shares his nickname with Andre Dawson of the Cubs, Bud Harrelson of the Mets, and pitcher Clay Carroll of the Reds. What was this nickname?

Answer: Hawk

Branca was 21-12 with Jackie Robinson and the 1947 Dodgers. In 1951, he went 13-12, but no pitch was more important in his career than game three of the National League playoffs after the Dodgers and Giants tied at season's end. Going into the ninth inning of game three, the Dodgers had a 4-1 lead behind starting pitcher Don Newcombe. Manager Charlie Dressen decided to go to the bullpen when Newcombe got in trouble and gave up a run. Branca came to face Thomson, and gave up a walk-off three-run home run to give the Giants the NL pennant.
4. Pitcher Phil Regan began his career as a starting pitcher with the Tigers for six seasons. He became a Dodger in 1966, and seemed a good fit with his 14-1 record. He helped the Dodgers to the World Series in that season. What was his nickname?

Answer: Vulture

Beginning with the Dodgers, he came out of the bullpen, and stayed there during his time with the Cubs. In his first season with the Dodgers, he led the league with 21 saves also. The 1966 series resulted in the Dodgers being skunked in four games by the Orioles. Phil retired in 1972 after 13 seasons, going 96-81 along with 92 saves.
