Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which two teams represented the American and National Football Conferences in Super Bowl XXXVIII?

Answer: New England Patriots & Carolina Panthers

New England defeated the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC title game, and Carolina beat the Philadelphia Eagles for the NFC title. The Titans, Rams, and Cowboys, made the playoffs to finish the season, but none made it to the biggest game of all. The Raiders and Bucs played for the title in Super Bowl XXXVII. The Pats and the Rams played in Super Bowl XXXVI.
2. Which team had the better season win-loss record entering the Super Bowl, including the playoff games?

Answer: New England Patriots, 16-2

The Patriots finished with an NFL best regular season record of 14-2, and they of course hosted and won the Divisional and Conference Championship playoff games, giving the team 16 wins against 2 losses. After winning Super Bowl XXXVIII, they naturally
increased their record to 17-2 on the season overall (.895 winning percentage).
3. With a win over Carolina, the New England Patriots would enter the company of 9 other NFL franchises to win the Super Bowl more than once. Which of the following Bowl-winning teams did not win at least two Super Bowls?

Answer: Chicago Bears

While the Bears enjoyed much Championship success prior to the creation of the Super Bowl, their only official Bowl win was against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XX, January 26, 1986. Remember the The Super Bowl Shuffle video?
4. A Carolina Panther player in this game was once an XFL player. His XFL nickname was "He Hate Me". What was the name of this Panther and for which XFL team did he play?

Answer: Rod Smart & Las Vegas Outlaws

Rod Smart primarily returned kickoffs and he even managed to run one back 100 yards for a touchdown against the New Orleans Saints during the regular season. In the Super Bowl he had a total of 74 return yards, and he was the last player to touch the ball as he ran the ball back from his own 2 yard line with 4 seconds left. Smart managed a 20 yard return before he was tackled by Matt Chatham.

Another side note: Chatham was the man who leveled the Streaker fan who delayed the start of the second half kickoff.
5. As part of the pre-game ceremonies, who sang America's National Anthem?

Answer: Beyonce Knowles

The Dixie Chicks performed the anthem in 2003, and Mariah Carey performed the year before in 2002. Jessica Simpson didn't sing, but she did appear in the MTV-driven halftime show and in a Pizza Hut TV commercial with The Muppets. And as for Ms. Jackson, her infamous "wardrobe malfunction" during halftime made more news than the nail-biting finish of the game itself.
6. Tom Brady threw for 354 yards for the game. He threw for more yards in just one other game during the regular season. How many yards did he throw for and against which team did he record his highest passing yardage total of the season?

Answer: 368 yards & Houston Texans

Brady had a great game overall in the Super Bowl and his statistics bear that out. He completed 32 of 48 passes (66.7%), throwing for 3 TDs and had just one interception. Since the focus on the quarterback position is constant, when one does well and wins the big game, he almost always wins the MVP too. This game was no exception for MVP Tom Brady.
7. Which team scored the first points of the game?

Answer: Patriots

Tom Brady threw to Deion Branch for the first score. Tom Brady won his second career Super Bowl MVP award against the Carolina Panthers. His first was in January 2002 against the heavily favored St. Louis Rams.
8. Which team had the most turnovers and how many did they have?

Answer: Both teams had just 1 official turnover each

Brady threw one interception to Reggie Howard and Troy Brown fumbled the ball. Thanks to "chango" who identified that in order for Brown's fumble to be registered a turnover, it must be recovered by the opposing team.
9. Which American television network presented the game and who were the game's commentators in the booth?

Answer: CBS with Greg Gumbel and Phil Simms

Greg Gumbel used to be a studio host when NBC had an NFL TV package. Now he is paired with the ex-Giants quarterback, Phil Simms in the booth as the No.1 team for CBS.

New England's Deion Branch finished the game with a team-high and game-high 143 receiving yards.

Answer: 1

17. Percentage-wise, Adam Vinatieri's field goal kicking was the worst season of his professional career with the Patriots. What was his percentage of made field goals during the 2003 regular season and his percentage that he hit during the Super Bowl?

Answer: 73.5% and 33.3%

Adam Vinatieri missed the first attempt wide right from 31 yards out and then he had his second attempt blocked from 36 yards out. He will be best known for the only kick that he made from 41 yards out to put the Patriots ahead by 3 with just 4 seconds left in the game.
