Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Women's Golf

Answer: Inbee Park

Sixty athletes competed in the return of women's golf to the Olympic Games for the first time since 1900. Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand shot a six under par in the first round to take an early lead but Park assumed the lead in the second round after Jutanugarn shot an even 71. Park won by five strokes over silver medallist Lydia Ko of New Zealand and six from bronze medallist Shanshan Feng of China.
2. Swimming - Men's 100m butterfly

Answer: Joseph Schooling

The 21-year-old Schooling stunned a star-studded field and became the first ever Singaporean Olympic gold medallist in an Olympic record of 50.39 seconds. Schooling posted the fastest time in both the heats and semi-finals and got the preferred lane 4 for the final. American Michael Phelps, who had won this race for the previous three Olympics, came in a three-way tie for the silver medal with South African Chad le Clos and László Cseh of Hungary.
3. Men's Field Hockey

Answer: Argentina

The Argentinian team won the gold at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto to clinch a spot in the tournament. The team did not dominate in the round robin, winning just two of their five matches, with two draws. In the knockout phase, the team beat Spain, Germany, and then Belgium in the final to win the gold medal. The gold was the first medal ever for Argentina in the sport.
4. Men's Triathlon

Answer: Alistair Brownlee

Great Britain's Alistair Brownlee became the first male triathlete to ever win consecutive Olympic golds when he crossed the finish line with a time of 1:45.01. Making the victory even sweeter was the fact that Alistair's younger brother, Jonathan Brownlee, crossed the line in second place to claim a medal for his second consecutive Olympics as well (adding to a bronze from 2012).

The triathlon consisted of a 1.5 km swim, a 38.48 km bike ride, and finished with a 10 km run. Henri Schoeman took the bronze medal, becoming the first South African triathlete to win an Olympic medal.
5. Shooting - Men's Double Trap

Answer: Fehaid Al-Deehani

History was made on the shooting range when Al-Deehani defeated Italy's Marco Innocenti to become the first Independent Olympic Athlete to win Olympic gold. A native Kuwaiti, Al-Deehani competed under the Olympic flag after Kuwait was banned from Rio due to government interference in their Olympic organization.

The 49-year-old Al-Deehani had previously won two bronze medals competing for Kuwait and was an officer in the Kuwait military. Steven Scott from Great Britain won the bronze medal.
6. Men's Water Polo

Answer: Serbia

The Serbian team entered the Olympics as heavy favourites. They were coming off victories in the 2015 World Championships, 2016 European Championships, and the four previous World League championships. However, the team got off to a slow start and needed a win over Japan on the final day of group play to advance into the knockout round. Once in the round of eight, the team stepped up and defeated Spain, Italy, and then Croatia for gold. Filip Filopovic tied for the tournament lead with 19 goals and was named tournament MVP.

Italy defeated Montenegro for the bronze medal.
7. Table Tennis - Women's Singles

Answer: Ding Ning

Ding entered the tournament as the number one ranked women's singles player and the defending silver medallist from London. Ding lost only one set in the best-of-seven format in her four victories leading up to the final, which was against her countrymate Li Xiaoxia, the third ranked player in the bracket.

The final went the maximum seven games with Ning coming back from 3-2 down in sets to win 4-3. North Korea's Kim Song-i claimed the bronze medal. The two finalists later paired up to win the women's team event for China as well.
8. Weightlifting - Men's 62 kg

Answer: Óscar Figueroa

The Colombian weightlifter delivered one of the more memorable moments of the Rio Olympics when he stood on the lifting platform after he had clinched the gold medal and took off his shoes, a signal of his immediate retirement. The 33-year-old had won the Olympic silver in 2012 in the same weight class (where he set an Olympic record with a clean and jerk lift of 177 kg), as well as gold at the 2011 and 2015 Pan American Games.

Indonesia's Eko Yuli Irawan and Farkhad Kharki of Kazakhstan joined Figueroa on the podium.
9. Athletics - Men's Pole Vault

Answer: Thiago Braz da Silva

Thiago Braz da Silva captivated the native crowd as he defeated France's Renaud Lavillenie to win the gold medal. He entered the Olympics with the third highest successful vault of the year, while Lavillenie held the World Record, Olympic Record, and the #1 world ranking.

After Lavillenie improved his 5.97 m Olympic record by one cm, da Silva cleared 6.03m, claiming the Olympic record, South American record and eventually the gold medal after Lavillenie failed to jump 6.08m and settled for silver. Sam Kendricks of the USA won the bronze medal. Thiago Braz da Silva's gold was one of seven gold medals won by Brazil at the Olympics and the only track and field medal for the host nation.
10. Athletics - Men's 400m

Answer: Wayde van Niekerk

Wayde van Niekerk was the South African flagbearer for the opening ceremony and did not disappoint when he hit the track. Along with winning the gold medal in a time of 43.03 seconds, he broke Michael Johnson's world record of 43.18 seconds, which had stood since 1999.

He also improved on Johnson's Olympic record of 43.49 that was set in 1996. Also in this record performance, van Niekerk became the first man to win a major championship from lane 8, the outermost lane on the track. Kiriani James, representing Grenada, won the silver and LaShawn Merritt of the USA took home bronze.
11. Cycling - Men's Team Pursuit AND Women's Team Pursuit

Answer: Great Britain

The quartet of Ed Clancy, Steven Burke, Owain Doull and Bradley Wiggins set a world record in the first round of competition, and then went even quicker in the gold medal race, ending with a time of 3:50.265. The gold was Wiggins' eighth Olympic medal and fifth gold, setting a new record for the most decorated British Olympic athlete ever. He announced his retirement after the race. Australia won the silver medal, with Denmark finishing in the bronze medal position.

Not to be out done, the British women's team pursuit team set world records in all three of their races. After a run of 4:13.26 in qualifying, the team of Katie Archibald, Laura Trott, Elinor Barker, and Joanna Rowsell ran their first round at 4:12.152 and then an even faster 4:10.236 in the gold medal race to defeat the United States. This was the first Olympics where the women's team event was over the same distance as the men's, 4 km rather than 3 km. Canada finished third.
12. Men's Football

Answer: Brazil

Despite being a powerhouse on the football landscape, Brazil had never won Olympic gold in men's soccer and decided Rio de Janeiro would be the ideal location to snap that streak. As the men's tournament restricted players to under-23s (with the allowance of three over-agers), Brazil added Barcelona star Neymar to the team.

After embarrassing Honduras 6-0 in the semi-finals, Brazil squared off with Germany for the gold medal in the same stadium where the Germans had demolished Brazil 7-1 in the World Cup semifinals just two years prior.

The roles were reversed this time and the Brazilians ended the gold medal drought with a win by penalties. Nigeria defeated Honduras to win the bronze medal.
13. Athletics - Women's 800m

Answer: Caster Semenya

Semenya improved by one spot from her silver medal finish in London 2012 to win the gold with a run of 1:55.28. Semenya won by a commanding 1.2 seconds despite only taking the lead in the final 200 meters. Semenya had previously been a subject of controversy; she was subjected to gender testing by the IAAF in 2009 following a dramatic improvement in her personal records.

Although the results were not disclosed, it was announced Semenya experienced hyperandrogenism, a condition that produces excessive testosterone.

Despite being cleared to compete after the testing, her fellow competitors have complained about the unfair advantage Semenya's condition gives her. Burundi's Francine Niyonsaba won the silver medal and Margaret Wambui of Kenya came third.
14. Men's Rugby Sevens

Answer: Fiji

Rugby sevens was contested in the Olympics for the first time in Rio and produced a first-time gold medallist in the Fijian team, who also won the first Olympic medal ever for the nation. The squad was dominant, winning all six of their matches, including a dominating 43-7 victory in the final over Great Britain.

The team also converted the most tries and scored the most points in the tournament by a wide margin. To celebrate the victory and the first Olympic medal being a gold medal, a national holiday was declared in the country. Great Britain claimed the silver and South Africa won the bronze medal.
15. Cycling - Men's Road Race

Answer: Greg van Avermaet

The road race was contested on the morning of Day 1, making it one of the first medals to be awarded in the Olympics. The 241.5 km race course contained multiple laps of uphill roads that favoured the climbers over the sprinters. After a late race crash amongst the leaders took out favourite Vincenzo Nibali, Belgian Greg van Avermaet and Dane Jakob Fuglsang were able to catch Polish leader Rafal Majka in the final kilometers and van Avermaet sprinted away in the final meters. Fuglsang came across second on van Avermaet's back wheel, with Majka finishing third, five seconds behind.
