The opening match was played in Tokyo Stadium. Later in the tournament three matches were cancelled due to the effects of Typhoon Hagibis.

South Africa became the first team to win a rugby World Cup after losing one of their pool matches. They were beaten 23-13 by New Zealand on the second day of the tournament.
