Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Canadian tennis has not always been at the top, in fact, they did not win one of the individual Grand Slams until 2019. Which of these mixed doubles players is from south of the 'Great White North'?

Answer: Kevin Anderson

Bianca Andreescu, Eugenie Bouchard, and Vasek Pospisil all play for Canada. Pospisil specializes in doubles play and won the 2014 Wimbledon men's doubles with American Jack Sock. The following year, he reached a Grand Slam high by making the Wimbledon men's quarterfinals.

Eugenie Bouchard as the first Canadian to reach a Grand Slam final, in Wimbledon of 2014, when she ultimately lost to Petra Kvitová. This was her best year, with success across many tournaments, reaching an individual ranking of 5. A funny story about her: she famously tweeted that the Atlanta Falcons would win Super Bowl LI when they were up 28-3, and a Patriots fan bet her that his team would come back and win. She lost the bet and had to go on a date with the fan.

Bianca Andreescu became the highest-ranking female Canadian when she got to No. 4 on the WTA in October 2019. She also became the first Canadian to win an individual Grand Slam when she won the 2019 US Open, as a teenager! Her parents are Romanians who moved to Canada, and she had the opportunity to represent either country.

Of the four, Kevin Anderson represents South Africa. He reached a top ranking of 5 in the ATP in 2018, but has not won a Grand Slam competition - his closest being the 2017 US Open where he lost to Rafael Nadal. We can replace him on the Canadian mixed doubles team with Milos Raonic, a successful player who got to an ATP ranking of No. 3 in November 2016.
2. Since the turn of the century, Swiss tennis has been at a really high level. Which one of these mixed doubles does not come from Switzerland?

Answer: Monica Seles

Roger Federer, Martina Hingis, and Stan Wawrinka all play for Switzerland. Stan Wawrinka achieved a No. 3 ATP ranking in January 2014 and he has won three individual Grand Slams: the 2014 Australian Open, 2015 Roland Garros, and 2016 US Open. Each time he defeated the ATP No. 1 to win the title. While often overshadowed by tennis' "Big Three", Wawrinka has been excellent in his own right, and would have been a star in any other era.

Martina Hingis was a No. 1 WTA-ranked singles and doubles player, once holding both rankings simultaneously for 29 straight weeks. Both of her parents were successful tennis players in Czechoslovakia, and, after her parents' divorce, she and her mother defected to Switzerland where she became naturalized. She was the first Swiss player to reach No. 1, and the first to win a Grand Slam. She has five individual Grand Slams, thirteen women's doubles Grand Slam titles (all of them in 1998), and seven mixed doubles Grand Slam titles.

Roger Federer, the first of the "Big Three" to rise to stardom, is a Swiss superstar who was the first to win 20 individual Grand Slam titles. He won his first at the age of 21, Wimbledon 2003, and, while he had a decline in his career from 2010 to 2016, he had a resurgence in 2017 which led to him becoming the oldest No. 1 when he regained the ranking in 2018.

Monica Seles was not a Swiss tennis player, she was Yugoslavian, and later American. Noted for winning the 1990 Roland Garros at the young age of 16, she was also the victim of a brutal stabbing in 1993 when she was attacked on the court. This greatly affected Seles' career. We can replace her for the mixed doubles with Belinda Bencic, perhaps, who, on February 20, achieved a WTA ranking of No. 4.
3. Russian tennis has been around at least since the beginning of the 20th century. Having emerged again from the Soviet tennis program, which of these mixed doubles does not hail from Russia?

Answer: Alexander Zverev

Svetlana Kuznetsova, Marat Safin, and Maria Sharapova all play for Russia. Maria Sharapova got to No. 1 on the WTA rankings for the first time in August 2005 at the young age of 18, the first from Russia. She has won five Grand Slam titles, two in the Roland Garros and one in each of the others. She plays right-handed, however, she is a lefty; had she played that way, experts think that she would have been even more formidable.

Marat Safin also reached No. 1 for Russia; his ranking was first achieved in November, 2000. He has only won two Grand Slam titles, the 2005 Australian Open, and the 2000 US Open, where he won the title famously defeating fan favourite Pete Sampras in straight sets.

Svetlana Kuznetsova reached No. 2 on the WTA rankings in September, 2007, and has four Grand Slam titles to her name - two as an individual (the 2009 Roland Garros and the 2004 US Open) and two as a doubles player (the Australian Opens of 2005 and 2012). She reached No. 3 in doubles ranking as well, this achieved in June of 2004.

Alexander Zverev, despite the Russian-sounding name, is a German player. He was ATP-ranked at No. 3 for the first time in November 2017. He won the gold medal at the 2020 Olympic Games and reached the finals in the US Open in 2020. He should be replaced by Daniil Medvedev, a Russian who has been ranked world No. 2 in March, 2021. His first Grand Slam title was the 2021 US Open, where he surprisingly defeated Novak Djokovic in straight sets.
4. Australians have a long and storied history of playing tennis. This is why one of the four Grand Slam tournaments was awarded to them. Which of these mixed doubles does not come from a land down under?

Answer: Tracy Austin

Margaret Court, Lleyton Hewitt, and Rod Laver all play for Australia. Rod Laver was the first person to win the Grand Slam of tennis, winning all four Open tournaments in the same calendar year. He did it in 1962 and in 1969, and might have been able to do so in between, however, he was banned from participating for five years in these tournaments because he turned pro in 1963. The main court for the Australian Open is named for him.

Lleyton Hewitt reached No. 1 on the ATP rankings in November 2001 before he turned 21. This made him the youngest No. 1 male. He won two Grand Slam tournaments, the 2001 US Open and the 2002 Wimbledon, however, he never did win the Australian Open, the tournament he wanted to win most of all. In the 2000 Wimbledon tournament, he also won the men's doubles.

Margaret Court is said by many to be the greatest women's tennis player of all time. Over her career she won 24 individual Grand Slam titles, 19 women's doubles titles, and 21 mixed doubles titles. 1970 was the year she achieved the tennis Grand Slam, winning all four Open tournaments. She was most successful at the Australian Open, winning 11 singles, 8 doubles, and 4 mixed doubles titles.

Tracy Austin was an American tennis player. She reached No. 1 in the WTA rankings in April 1980 and won two Grand Slam tennis titles, the US Open in 1979 and 1981. We can replace her with Ashleigh Barty, the No. 1-ranked tennis star who first made it to the top of the WTA in June, 2019. Her first Grand Slam title was the 2019 Roland Garros which she followed with the 2021 Wimbledon and the 2022 Australian Open.
5. The French have long been involved with tennis; their French Open, known as the Roland Garros, is the pinnacle of clay surface play. Alors, which of these mixed doubles does not have roots in L'Hexagone?

Answer: Felix Auger Aliassime

Marion Bartoli, Suzanne Lenglen, and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga all play for France. Known for his powerful serve, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga managed to reach a career-high ATP ranking of No. 5 in February of 2012. Though he doesn't have any Grand Slam titles to his name, he did reach the finals in the 2008 Australian Open, and semifinaled in several other tournaments.

Suzanne Lenglen was the first female No. 1 when the rankings were introduced in 1926. Her Grand Slam successes came mostly on the grass surfaces of Wimbledon with five wins (1919, 1920, 1921, 1922, 1923, 1925), but also on her home clay courts with two French Open wins (1925, 1926). The second court at the French Open is named for her. She also won the exact same tournaments as a doubles player. She also has five mixed doubles titles. Her singles record of 332-7 gives her a colossal winning percentage of nearly 98%!

Marion Bartoli, a rare two-handed player on both sides of her body, was a successful player who reached No. 7 on the WTA rankings. Her lone Grand Slam win came at the 2013 Wimbledon tournament, and this without dropping a single set. Despite a weak serve, Bartoli excelled at returns and accuracy.

Felix Auger Aliassime is a Canadian tennis player. Up-and-coming as a youngster, he stunned the field by making it to the Wimbledon quarterfinals followed by the US Open semifinals in 2021. He should be replaced by Gaël Monfils, perhaps, who is a successful player who has been ranked as high as No. 6 ATP. Though he doesn't have a Grand Slam title, he has reached as high as the semifinals on more than one occasion.
6. When you think of South American tennis, Argentina is always a powerhouse. Which of these mixed doubles in not an Argentine?

Answer: Garbine Muguruza

Juan Martín del Potro, Gabriela Sabatini, and Guillermo Vilas all play for Argentina. Guillermo Vilas was a great player who won four Grand Slam titles: The Australian Opens of 1978 and 1979, the 1977 Roland Garros, and the 1977 US Open. In Wimbledon, he got as close as the quarterfinals, twice. By today's ranking system, Vilas should have been No. 1 on the ATP ranking, however, officially, he was only placed at No. 2, and this was in April of 1975. A Netflix documentary covers this controversy and parts of Vilas' career.

In February 1989, Gabriela Sabatini achieved her highest ranking of No. 3. However, she was a very good tennis player who had a lot of success, including winning the 1990 US Open and being a finalist at Wimbledon 1991. On many occasions, she was a semifinalist at both the Australian Open and at the Roland Garros. In doubles, Sabatini also stood out, also reaching a No. 3 ranking. Partnering with Steffi Graf, she won at Wimbledon 1988 and was a three-time finalist at the Roland Garros.

Juan Martín del Potro was ranked as high as No. 3 in a time when the "Big Three" (or "Big Four") were dominating the tennis world. He was finally able to win a Grand Slam title at the 2009 US Open, defeating both Federer and Nadal on the way to win the cup.

Garbiñe Muguruza plays for Spain and was born in Venezuela. She got to No. 1 on the WTA rankings in September 2017. Her wins at the 2016 Roland Garros and Wimbledon 2017 were very impressive. We can replace her with Gisela Dulko. Despite only reaching No. 26 on the WTA rankings for singles, Dulko was a doubles specialist who was ranked No. 1 in November 2010. She won the 2011 Australian Open partnered with Flavia Pennetta.
7. Germany has always fared well in tennis and it has produced many world-class players. Which of these mixed doubles is not from Germany?

Answer: Caroline Wozniacki

Boris Becker, Angelique Kerber, and Michael Stich all play for Germany. Michael Stich was a German No. 2-ranked player which he gained in November 1993. He won Wimbledon twice: Once as a singles player in 1991, and the second time as a doubles player in 1992. To win the latter, Stich partnered with John McEnroe and the final was a brutal 5-set thriller with the final set ending 19-17. He was also an Olympic gold-medal winner, partnering with Boris Becker in the 1992 Barcelona games.

Angelique Kerber was a No. 1-ranked player in September 2016. Taking after Rafael Nadal, Kerber is right-handed but plays left-handed to capitalize on the advantage that it gives. Her first Grand Slam title came at the 2016 Australian Open, and she followed it up with a win at the 2016 US Open. In 2018, Kerber won at Wimbledon as well.

Boris Becker won his first Grand Slam event at the young age of 17 when he entered in the 1985 Wimbledon and won. He would go on to have a stellar career with the aforementioned Olympic gold, and six Grand Slam titles to his name. Needless to say, he was ranked No. 1 for the first time in January 1991, and again later that year.

Caroline Wozniacki played for Denmark. In October 2010 she rose to the top of the WTA and was ranked No. 1. She won the Australian Open in 2018, her only Grand Slam title. However, she was very successful as a player until she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease; this may have accelerated her retirement, which came in 2020. We can replace her with Steffi Graf, an outstanding German player who set a record by holding the No. 1 rank for a grand total of 377 weeks. She also set a record for Grand Slam wins when she won her 22nd at the 1999 Roland Garros. This includes a calendar sweep of the 1988 events, all four. In addition to her singles successes, Graf also won the doubles at the 1988 Wimbledon tournament.
8. Though Serbia is just a new country, relatively, it has produced many tennis superstars. Which of these mixed doubles does not come from Serbia?

Answer: Marin Cilic

Ana Ivanovic, Jelena Jankovic, and Viktor Troicki all play for Serbia, Viktor Troicki was a relatively successful player. He never got past the fourth round in any of the Grand Slam events (though he did that several times), however, he did achieve a ranking of No. 12 in June 2011. He did infamously serve a one-year ban for missing a blood test.

Jelena Jankovic was a No. 1-ranked player which she gained in August 2008. Though she doesn't have any individual Grand Slam titles, she was a finalist in the 2008 US Open, and a semifinalist on several other occasions. She did, however, win the mixed doubles at 2007 Wimbledon.

Ana Ivanovic is also a former No. 1. She achieved this in June 2008 following her finals appearance at the Australian Open and her win at the Roland Garros of that year. She experienced a decline after getting all of the attention when she reached No. 1, and this continued for several years. However, she was able to overcome the obstacles and regained some of her top form again for a while before retiring.

Marin Cilic comes from the same area, but he is Croatian. His highest ranking was No. 3, which he achieved in January 2018. His Grand Slam win came at the 2014 US Open, but he was also a finalist at Wimbledon 2017 and at the 2018 Australian Open. Clearly, he can be replaced by Novak Djokovic. When tennis returned from its COVID-19 hiatus, Djokovic resumed his No. 1 streak and passed Roger Federer for most weeks at No. 1. Djokovic won his first Grand Slam event at the 2008 Australian Open. It would be another three years until he won another, but, since then, he was one of the most consistent players in the ATP.
9. Sweden has given us many things, IKEA, Spotify, meatballs, and, yes, some great tennis stars. Which of these players does not come from the same country as ABBA?

Answer: Justine Henin

Björn Borg, Stefan Edberg, and Sigrid Fick all play for Sweden. Sigrid Fick was a Finnish-born tennis player who moved to Sweden in 1910 at the age of 23. She won 56 Swedish titles, 22 of them in singles play. She was also an accomplished doubles player, winning two medals for the mixed doubles at the Olympics.

Stefan Edberg was an excellent tennis player who was ranked No. 1 in both singles and doubles play. In 1983, Edberg swept all four Junior Grand Slam events. He has six senior Grand Slam titles, two each in all but the Roland Garros, in which his highest achievement was being the losing finalist in 1989. As a doubles player, Edberg has three Grand Slam wins.

Björn Borg was also a world No. 1 in the ATP. He has eleven Grand Slam titles to his names , all of them in either the Roland Garros or Wimbledon. In the US Open he was a four-time finalist, but, the win eluded him. In the Australian Open, Borg only appeared once, when he was 17. He enjoyed so much success and became such an icon that he retired at the age of 26, well before most players reach their prime.

Justine Henin was a Belgian tennis player who spent 117 weeks in total as No. 1 in the WTA. She won seven Grand Slam titles, though never at Wimbledon. Her first retirement came in 2008 while she was still ranked No. 1. She attempted to make a comeback in 2010, however, a year later she retired for good. We can replace her with Sofia Arvidsson, a Swedish player who has had singular success against top-ranked players, but never was able to follow up with consistent form.
10. In Spain, tennis is a very popular sport and there is a climate that supports playing throughout the entire year. Which of these mixed doubles is not a Spaniard?

Answer: Fernando González

Conchita Martínez, Carlos Moyá, and Carla Suárez Navarro all play for Spain. Carla Suárez Navarro topped out at No. 6 on the WTA rankings. Though she was a very good tennis player, she never made it past the quarterfinals in any of the Grand Slam tournaments. She has a very strong backhand which she wields single-handed, unusual for many female players.

Carlos Moyá reached No. 1 in the ATP in March, 1999. He was the winner of the 1998 Roland Garros as well as the runner-up in the 1997 Australian Open. He was also instrumental in Spain's Davis Cup successes in 2003 and 2004, in the latter where they were the winners.

Conchita Martínez was a successful Spanish tennis player and the first from her country to win the women's singles title at Wimbledon (1994). In the Grand Slam events, she was also a finalist in both the 1998 Australian Open as well as the 2000 Roland Garros. Her highest ranking was No. 2 in the WTA, which she achieved in October 1995. For her style of play, Martínez was nicknamed Senorita Topspin.

Fernando González was a Chilean tennis player. His highest ranking was No. 5 and his best showing in the Grand Slam was as a finalist in the 2007 Australian Open. He is also a three-time medalist at the Olympics. He will be replaced by Rafael Nadal, obviously. When Nadal won the 2022 Australian Open, this gave him 21 Grand Slam titles, breaking the three-way tie he had with Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.
