Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What three teams won their respective NFC divisions in 1991?

Answer: Washington, Detroit, New Orleans

The Redskins and Lions faced off in the NFC Title game after winning their divisions. The Saints lost 27-20 to the Falcons in the Wildcard Round.
2. What eventual playoff team suffered a 56-17 loss to the Redskins during the regular season in 1991?

Answer: Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons were blown out in Washington in midseason, but eventually made the playoffs as a Wildcard team. They eventually got a chance to redeem themselves against the Redskins, and while they played better, lost the game 24-7.
3. Who replaced Ron Meyer as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts after the team's 0-5 start?

Answer: Rick Venturi

Venturi took over to lead the Colts to a 1-11 finish in 1991. He did not return in 1992. History repeated itself in 1996, when Venturi closed out what Jim Mora had started in New Orleans, and did not return in 1997 either.
4. This AFC team snuck into the playoffs with an 8-8 record, losing in the Wildcard round to the Houston Oilers.

Answer: New York Jets

The 7-8 Jets went into Miami in the final week of the 1991 season and knocked out the Dolphins in an exciting game to attain the AFC's 6th seed. New York lost to Houston the next week, 17-10.
5. Which of the following receivers was not a member of the 1991 New Orleans Saints?`

Answer: Michael Haynes

Haynes was a member of the Atlanta Falcons in 1991. The Falcons defeated the Saints (who eventually signed Haynes a few years later) in the Wildcard Round 27-20.
6. What AFC team finished 12-4 in 1991 after a 5-11 1990 season?

Answer: Denver Broncos

The Broncos made the Super Bowl in 1989 with an 11-5 mark, fell to 5-11 in 1990, and rebounded in 1991 with a 12-4 record. Denver lost in the Conference Championship to Buffalo 10-7.
7. Which of the following teams finished below .500 in 1991?

Answer: Los Angeles Rams

The Rams were the only team to miss the playoffs in every season from 1990-1998. The mediocre 1991 squad was just two years removed from an NFC Championship Game performance. The team would not reach the playoffs again until 1999, which would result in a Super Bowl win.
8. Which of the following statements is true about the 1991 AFC Championship game?

Answer: The Bills' lone touchdown was an interception return

Bills linebacker Carlton Bailey returned an errant John Elway pass 11 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter to give the Bills a lead they would never relinquish in this 10-7 win. The "77 seconds" is also meaningful when it comes to Bills-Broncos games, but it refers to the amount of time it took for Buffalo to score three touchdowns in a 1990 matchup between the two teams at Rich Stadium.
9. Which of the following statements is true about the 1991 NFC Championship game?

Answer: Washington outscored Detroit 24-0 in the second half

The Redskins, who led the Lions 17-10 at halftime, pulled away in the final two quarters to win 41-10. Kramer actually played a decent game, throwing for 249 yards, but only 54 of those attained by Green.
10. Which of the following statements is true about Super Bowl XXVI?

Answer: Washington had 2 receivers catch 7 passes and surpass 100 yards

Washington's Gary Clark and Art Monk both surpassed 100 yards receiving, finishing with 7 catches each and totalling 227 yards.
