Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The American League Detroit franchise began in 1901. What was their team name in 1901?

Answer: Tigers

The Tigers were one of very few teams that did not go through a name change in the first 100 years of Major League baseball. Under manager George Stallings, the team finished third in the AL with a 74-61 record, only 8.5 games back of the pennant-winning White Sox.

The Tigers' shortstop, Kid Elberfeld, was the only starter to bat over .300 with his .308 average. Roscoe Miller went 23-13 to lead the team.
2. The Detroit franchise was the first American League team to go to three consecutive World Series from 1907-1909. How many times did they win the series in that stretch?

Answer: 0

The Tigers lost to the Cubs in 1907 and 1908, then to the Pirates in 1909. The Chicago Cubs were the first team ever to go to three consecutive World Series from 1906-1908. The Cubs won two of those.
3. Who was the first Detroit Tiger to hit 50+ home runs in a season?

Answer: Hank Greenberg

The others never played for Detroit. Greenberg played from 1930-1947, and all but one season in a Tiger uniform. He got the attention of baseball fans when he smacked 58 in 1938, coming very close to Babe Ruth's record of 60, set in 1927. Greenberg was a two-time AL MVP in 1935 and 1940. Hank retired as a Pirate in 1947 with 331 home runs over 13 seasons.

He lost baseball time due to war.
4. Which of the following never managed the Detroit Tigers?

Answer: Jim Frey

Jennings took the Tigers to three World Series from 1907-1909. Martin had the club from 1971-1973. Anderson helmed the team from 1979-1995, and took a Manager of the Year award in 1984 and 1987. Jim Frey only managed the Royals and Cubs from 1980-1986, then retired.
5. In which year did the Tigers win their first World Series?

Answer: 1935

After their three appearances coming up empty-handed from 1907-1909, the Tigers went through a dryspell until 1934, but lost that World Series to the St. Louis Cardinals. 1935 would hit paydirt, taking it all against the Cubs four games to two. The Tigers had player-manager Mickey Cochrane, Hank Greenberg, Charlie Gehringer, Goose Goslin, and pitchers Tommy Bridges and Schoolboy Rowe.
6. Which Tiger pitcher became their first 30-game winner in 1968?

Answer: Denny McLain

Although all 30-game winners, the others never wore the Tiger uniform. McLain teamed up with Mickey Lolich for a combined 48-15 season record in 1968. While Denny went 31-6, they both helped the Tigers to the World Series and came home with rings against the St. Louis Cardinals. Lolich was the series MVP, winning three games.
7. In the franchise's first 100 years in the Major Leagues, how many times did they win 100+ games in a season?

Answer: 5

Their first century mark was in 1915 under Hughie Jennings with a 100-54 record. 1934 saw them go 101-53. In 1961, in the first 162-game season, the Tigers went 101-61 under Bob Scheffing for a second place AL finish. 1968 under manager Mayo Smith had them go 103-59. Finally, Sparky Anderson topped them all in 1984 when he helmed Detroit to a 104-58 record, also winning the World Series against the Padres, and Sparky also took his first of two Manager of the Year awards.
8. Who was the first Detroit Tiger to win a batting title in 1907?

Answer: Ty Cobb

The others listed weren't born yet. Cobb won his first of 11 batting titles in 1907. He won another the following season, then in 1909 he three-peated and won the Triple Crown also. If it weren't for Cleveland's Nap Lajoie who beat Cobb by .001 in 1910, Ty would have won nine consecutive batting titles.

Another Indian, Tris Speaker, beat Cobb by .015 in 1916, then Cobb won three more consecutive crowns from 1917-1919. This had the promise for an unbreakable streak of 13 batting titles that didn't happen. Ty's highest season average was .420 in 1911.

He hit .400 three times in his career.
9. The Tigers have had their share of pitching greats, throwing five no-hitters in their first 100 years of baseball. Who threw their first no-hitter in 1912?

Answer: George Mullin

The others weren't pitchers and weren't born yet. After going 18-10 in 1911, Mullin went 12-17 in 1912, but one of those wins came in the form of Detroit's first no-hitter. On the July 4th game, George threw the no-no in the second game of a doubleheader against the St. Louis Browns, winning 7-0.

The team would wait until 1952 to see another Tiger no-hitter. In 1952, Virgil Trucks threw two no-hitters only three months and ten days apart. Other Tiger pitchers to throw a no-hitter were Jim Bunning in 1958, and Jack Morris in 1984.
10. What was the name of Detroit's first baseball stadium that they played their home games at in 1901?

Answer: Bennett Park

Bennett Park opened in 1896, and the Tigers moved into it in their first season in 1901. They continued to play there until 1911, the year that Ty Cobb batted .420 and took MVP honors. In 1912, Navin Field opened right where Bennett Park stood, named after owner Frank Navin.

The Tigers played there for the rest of the 20th century. The stadium went through many name changes. In 1938, it was renamed Briggs Stadium after new owner Walter Briggs. In 1961, the stadium took on the name Tiger Stadium until the 1999 season.

In 2000, the Tigers moved into the brand new Comerica Park.
