Answer: Hamburg

Hamburger SV were founded in 1919, and were only occasionally successful in terms of major honours during the first 60 years of their existence. The signing of Kevin Keegan from Liverpool in the late 1970s saw an upturn in their fortunes, and they won the Bundesliga three times between 1979 and 1983.

After losing the 1980 European Cup final to Nottingham Forest, they lifted the trophy in 1983 with victory over Juventus.

Answer: Borussia Monchengladbach

Borussia Monchengladbach were founded in 1900, but had to wait until 1960 before winning their first major honour, the German Cup. The appointment of Hennes Weisweiler as manager in 1964 saw the club transformed into one of the best in Germany. They battled Bayern Munich for domestic supremacy throughout the 1970s, and won the UEFA Cup in 1975 and 1979, with final victories over Twente Enschede and Red Star Belgrade.

Borussia Dortmund were formed in 1909. They had a golden era in the late 1950s/ early 1960s when they won three domestic titles and a German Cup, as well as the European Cup Winners Cup. After a long period in the doldrums, they returned to prominence in the 1990s, winning the 1996 Bundesliga and the 1997 European Champions League.

VfL Wolsburg were founded in 1945 as the works team of the Volkswagen car company. They eventually reached the top flight of German football in 1997, and won the Bundesliga in 2009. A first German Cup triumph followed in 2015.

Answer: Werder Bremen

Werder Bremen were formed in 1899, but didn't win their first major honour until 1961 when they lifted the German Cup. A first Bundesliga title followed in 1965. The appointment of Rehhagel as manager in 1981 saw an upsurge in their fortunes, and two league titles were won in 1988 and 1993. The European Cup Winners Cup was won in 1992, with Monaco being their opponents in the final.

Answer: Eintracht Frankfurt

Eintracht Frankfurt were formed in 1899 and won their first national title in 1959. That success qualified them for the 1959-60 European Cup, and they went all the way to the final in Glasgow where they came up against the four-time winners Real Madrid.

Inspired by Ferenc Puskas and Alfredo Di Stefano, Real won 7-3 in one of the most famous matches in European football history. However, Eintracht had a notable period of success when they won the German Cup four times between 1974 and 1988, with a UEFA Cup triumph in 1980.

Answer: Bayern Munich

Bayern were founded in 1900, and, apart from a single title in 1932, weren't particularly successful until the 1960s. That all changed in the mid-1960s, and over the next 50 years they were by far the most successful club in Germany. Apart from their hat-trick of European Cups, they won the Champions League in 2001 and 2013, and, in 2017, their 27th domestic title.

RasenBallsport Leipzig were formed by the Red Bull drinks company, and began life in the fifth tier of German football in 2009. It took them just seven seasons to make it to the top division, and they were runners-up to Bayern Munich in their first season at this level.

Answer: Dynamo Berlin

Dynamo Berlin were formed in 1966 and were associated with the Stasi, the East German secret police. They dominated the Oberliga in the 1980s with ten successive titles, but these successes were tainted with allegations of match-fixing. After reunification they were placed in the third tier of German football, and attempted to rebrand themselves as FC Berlin, and later as BFC Dynamo.

Answer: Schalke 04

Schalke 04 were formed in 1904, in the Schalke district of Gelsenkirchen. One of the best-supported clubs in Germany, their heyday was between 1934 and 1948 when they won six domestic titles. A seventh followed in 1958, but no more for the rest of the 20th century.
