Elena Vesnina (Russia) defeated Venus Williams (USA) 6-1 6-3, but lost in the 2nd round to Agnieszka Radwanska (Poland) 6-2 6-1. Venus Williams is the sister of the famous player Serena Williams and together they dominated tennis in the early 2000s. Elena Vesnina also plays doubles, with the Indian player Sania Mirza.
The Italian Flavia Pennetta also went out in the first round to fellow Italian Camila Giorgi. Marion Bartoli suffered an upset at the hands of Mirjana Lucic.
