Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There was a shock result on the very first day of the tournament when Rafael Nadal lost in straight sets. Which player beat Nadal in the first round?

Answer: Steve Darcis

The Belgian player Steve Darcis was responsible for one of the shock results of Wimbledon 2013 when he beat two time Wimbledon champion (2008 and 2010) Rafael Nadal in straight sets. Darcis, ranked 135 in the world, beat the 5th seed Nadal 7-6 7-6 6-4.

This was the first time Nadal had been knocked out of a Grand Slam in the first round and it was the first time since 1996 that the winner of Roland Garros lost in the first round at Wimbledon.
2. Dubbed "Withdrawal Wednesday", day three of the tournament set a record for the most players to withdraw in a day at a grand slam in the open era. How many players withdrew on this day?

Answer: 7

"Withdrawal Wednesday" saw seven players withdraw through injury. They were: Victoria Azarenka, Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, Marin Cilic, John Isner, Radek Stepanek, Yaroslava Shvedova and Nadal's conqueror Steve Darcis. The women's 3rd seed, Maria Sharapova, also went out on this day after injuring herself during her match although she completed the match and did not withdraw.

This string of withdrawals and injuries lead to criticism of the Wimbledon courts with Azarenka claiming they were of "poor quality" and Sharapova deeming them "dangerous".

However, the organisers defended the courts saying they were the same as in previous years.
3. Day Three saw the defending champion in the men's singles beaten in the second round. Who was the player who defeated Roger Federer in four sets?

Answer: Sergiy Stakhovsky

Sergiy Stakhovsky, ranked 116 in the world, knocked out the 3rd seed and defending champion Roger Federer, providing another shock on a bizarre day that had seen seven withdrawals and the women's 3rd seed defeated (Sharapova). Stakhovsky beat Federer 6-7 7-6 7-5 7-6 in the second round.

This was Federer's earliest exit from Wimbledon since 2002 (when he lost in the first round). Stakhovsky was later beaten by Jurgen Melzer in the third round.
4. The British public always want their players to do well but how many of the British players, that started the first round in the men's and women's singles events, made it through to the second round?

Answer: 2

Of the British players who started the tournament only Andy Murray and Laura Robson made it to the second round. Although a disappointment for the British public this is not too surprising given that, with the exception of Heather Watson, the other British players had been given wildcards into the tournament as they did not qualify for entry through their ranking.
5. Wimbledon 2013 was not a great year for the USA as far as the men's singles event was concerned, with no American men making it to the third round. When did this last happen at Wimbledon?

Answer: 1912

Of the 11 players from the USA who started the tournament only 5 made it to the 2nd round and none of them were able to make it to round three. Notable US players include the 21st seed, Sam Querrey, who lost in the first round and John Isner, the 18th seed, who withdrew with a knee injury on "Withdrawal Wednesday" (day three).
6. The British public had something to cheer about with both a male and female singles player making it to the last 16. When was the last time this happened at Wimbledon?

Answer: 1998

The last time there was a British man and woman through to the 4th round of the singles at Wimbledon was in 1998 when Tim Henman and Sam Smith both made it to the 4th round. This time it was Andy Murray and Laura Robson representing Britain in the 4th round and looking for a place in the quarter finals. Andy Murray booked his quarter final place by beating Mikhail Youzhny 6-4 7-6 6-1 while Laura Robson lost to the Estonian player, Kaia Kanepi 7-6 7-5.
7. There was a shock result on Monday 1st July when the women's world No. 1 and defending champion Serena Williams went out. Which player, the 23rd seed, beat Serena?

Answer: Sabine Lisicki

Sabine Lisicki looked on course for an easy victory after taking the first set 6-2 but Serena Williams fought back winning the second set 6-1 and leading by a break in the third before Lisicki eventually overcame her, winning the match 6-2 1-6 6-4. Williams' defeat ended a 34 match winning streak and was only her 4th loss in 79 matches.
8. The ladies singles final was between two women who were both seeking their first grand slam win. Who beat Sabine Lisicki in straight sets to take her maiden Slam title?

Answer: Marion Bartoli

Aiming to become the first German woman since Steffi Graf to win a Grand Slam, 23rd seed Sabine Lisicki was beaten by the French player and 15th seed Marion Bartoli. Bartoli won her maiden Grand Slam title in her 47th Slam, beating Lisicki 6-1 6-4.
9. Despite the early exit of major players in the men's singles, the final was between the 1st and 2nd seeds. Who contested the final against the British player Andy Murray?

Answer: Novak Djokovic

The world No. 1 and 2011 Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic faced world No. 2 Andy Murray in the final. Djokovic only lost 2 sets on his way to the final both of which he lost in his semi-final against Del Potro. In a final lasting 3 hours 10 minutes and played in temperatures approaching 40 degrees Celsius, Murray was the victor beating Djokovic 6-4 7-5 6-4 to win his 2nd Grand Slam title and his first Wimbledon title.
10. Andy Murray ended a 77 year wait for a British winner of the Wimbledon men's singles. Who was the last British man to win Wimbledon all the way back in 1936?

Answer: Fred Perry

Fred Perry was the last British man to win Wimbledon when he won his third, consecutive title in 1936. Andy Murray is also the first Scot to win Wimbledon since Harold Mahony in 1896, 117 years ago!
