As the host country South Africa was the only team automatically qualified for the 2010 World Cup.

Argentine coach Diego Maradona replaced coach Alfio Basile in November 2008, half way through the qualifiers. He was part of the 1986 Argentine World Cup team that defeated West Germany 3-2 to win the World Cup Championship. In 1978 Argentina hosted the event and defeated Netherlands 3-1 to capture their first ever World Cup Championship.
