Zachary was a vampire who Buffy killed the night before, Darla begs The Master to let her kill Buffy, but he decides to send The Three. Giles says The Three are "warrior vampires, very proud and very strong."

Answer: unless I have to

Buffy says this to The Three when they attack her outside The Bronze. The Three fail to kill Buffy and therefore offer their lives in penance. The Master lets Darla kill them.
