Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bagpuss lives in the shop owned by ... who?

Answer: Emily

And Emily loved him! Emily was only ever shown in sepia-toned photographs, dressed in Victorian costume. The real-life Emily who posed for the photos with Bagpuss was the daughter of creator Peter Firmin, and is now a successful artist in her own right. The shop shown was called "Bagpuss & Co".
2. What type of creature was Gabriel?

Answer: a toad

He was a dark green toad, who played folk tunes on his banjo, often for Madeleine the rag doll to sing to. Their voices were provided by musicians John Faulkner and Sandra Kerr.
3. What is Yaffle the Woodpecker's title?

Answer: Professor

Professor Yaffle was a carved wooden bookend in the shape of a woodpecker. He wore half moon glasses and scoffed at most things. He was entranced by the mechanical ballerina though. "Yaffle" is also the Old English word for woodpecker. In Oliver Postgate's autobiography he says that he based the character of Yaffle on a mixture of his own uncle, and philosopher Bertrand Russell.
4. Which of these is NOT one of the mice on the Mouse Organ?

Answer: Bessiemouse

The full teams consists of Charliemouse, Jenniemouse, Janiemouse, Lizziemouse, Eddiemouse and Williemouse. The mice are great workers, and have been known to refuse to work if they can't sing. 'Mice not sing: mice not work. Mice strike!' The singers recorded the mice songs at normal speed, and then speeded up the tape to make it sound suitably mouse-like.
5. How many episodes of Bagpuss were made in total?

Answer: 13

Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin made only 13 episodes of this classic programme. They are all fantastic.
6. Which of these was NOT something Emily brought for Bagpuss to look after?

Answer: a toy car with no wheels

The mice cleaned up and mended all the things Emily brought them, and dragged them to the shop window. That way, if the real owner ever came past, they would see them, and come in to collect them.
7. What happened when Bagpuss thought?

Answer: everyone could see his thoughts in a little cloud above his head

He often did sing with Gabriel and Madeleine too. The soundtrack to the Bagpuss series is available to buy, and features all those songs you remember from your childhood.
8. What happened when Bagpuss went to sleep?

Answer: everyone else went to sleep too

Every programme drew to a close with Bagpuss yawning, everone getting safely back into place, and then him falling asleep. In the book, "Bagpuss in the Sun", he nearly falls asleep in the garden, and causes great panic amongst the others, who have to get safely back to the shop before he does nod off.
9. How did the mice introduce the films they showed on the Mouse Organ?

Answer: The Marvellous Mechanical Mouse Organ

'The Marvellous Mechanical Mouse Organ! Heave! Heave! Heave!' (as they pump the bellows.) The Marvellous Mechanical Mouse Organ was also accompanied by the Marvellous Mechanical Mouse Mill, which (apparently) made chocolate biscuits from breadcrumbs and butterbeans.
10. Which of these lines does NOT feature in Emily's magic poem at the start of every episode?

Answer: Just a saggy old cloth cat, baggy and a bit loose at the seams

The entire poem was: 'Bagpuss, dear Bagpuss, Old fat furry catpuss, Wake up and look at this thing that I bring. Wake up, be bright, be golden and light, Bagpuss, oh hear what I sing!' The other line was from the end of the episodes. He may have been saggy and loose, but Emily always loved him.
