Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which actor played the role of Inspector Morse in the series based on stories by Colin Dexter?

Answer: John Thaw

Actor John Thaw, most famous for his role as Inspector Morse, was born in 1942 in England and has played in a great number of TV and film productions. David Suchet is most famous for playing Agatha Christie's "Poirot", David Jason stars in "A Touch of Frost" and Warren Clarke is Dalziel in "Dalziel and Pascoe".
2. Which television series is based on the books by Elizabeth George?

Answer: "The Inspector Lynley Mysteries"

Although Elizabeth George is an American writer, she writes detective stories set in England. The first couple of seasons are based on her books, but when the BBC ran out of books, they started writing their own episodes. The other suggested answers are also based on books.
3. John Nettles plays DCI Barnaby in the series "Midsomer Murders". In which other detective series did he play a policeman?

Answer: "Bergerac"

This series was broadcasted between 1981 and 1991 and was set on the island of Jersey. The show wasn't very realistic, because there were so many murders on the island that there would be no one left after a couple of series!
4. In the series "A Touch of Frost" the main character, Jack Frost, is rather unorthodox in his manner of solving crime. Therefore he doesn't get along with his superior. What is his superior's name?

Answer: Superintendent Mullett

Because Frost didn't always did things "by the book", he and Mullett never really got along. Frost became very good in avoiding Mullett when he was called to his office again.
5. In the drama series "Judge John Deed", the Judge has rather different ways of solving things, which doesn't make him very popular. Which actor plays Judge John Deed?

Answer: Martin Shaw

"Judge John Deed" is a great show, which begins where normal detective series end: at the trial. Simon Chandler does play in "JJD", but he plays Sir Ian Rochester(John's rival), Trevor Eve plays in "Waking the Dead", and Ken Stott is the main character in "Messiah".
6. In "Murphy's Law", Tommy Murphy, played by James Nesbitt, goes undercover in a criminal organization to get proof for a certain crime. Which comedy series made this actor famous?

Answer: "Cold Feet"

"Cold Feet" was a mixture of comedy and drama, but ended a while ago. Fortunately, James Nesbitt came back on the screen as cool copper Tommy Murphy.
7. In "Silent Witness", actress Amanda Burton, who played Sam Ryan, quit after nearly eight seasons. To complete the team a new (and younger) character was added. Which character is NOT part of the team in season 9?

Answer: Dr Trevor Stuart

Dr Trevor Stuart has been on the show in the first couple of seasons, but disappeared when Sam Ryan moved from Cambridge to London, where she went to work with Leo Dalton and Harry Cunningham. When she left, Nikki Alexander took her place.
8. In "The Inspector Lynley Mysteries", Thomas Lynley is an aristocratic police man, as he is also an English Lord. In which English county is his very big house situated?

Answer: Cornwall

We see this house in the episode "A Suitable Vengeance", when Lynley and his fiancé return to his house to celebrate their engagement, and in the newer episode "In the Guise of Death", when Havers is following a course of self-defence there and Lynley is visiting his mother.
9. One of the longest running crime dramas on British television is "Taggart", a Scottish police series. Why is this series called "Taggart"?

Answer: Because there used to be an inspector Jim Taggart

"Taggart" is a great series, which has been broadcasted for the last 22 years and there are still seasons to come. Although no one of the original cast of 1983 is still in the series, it has kept its quality and, more importantly, its humour.
10. A lot of TV series are based on books. Most of the time, authors are involved in making the television series. Which author took this quite literally and appeared in almost every episode of the series?

Answer: Colin Dexter

Colin Dexter appeared in nearly every Morse episode, as "someone on the street" or "someone in the pub", just as Alfred Hitchcock did in his movies.
